i am pretty sure my sons are teething. last night though was really bad. one of them woke screaming a very unusually loud and painful scream. the only thing i could think of was that it hurt him really bad. after holding him for about 30 minutes and giving him tylenol, he stopped crying (the only other time i have given tylenol was after 2 and 4 month shots) i have 2 questions:

    1. WHen your child was teething, did they cry/scream so loud or is it usually more of an uncomfortable but more mild pain.

    2. Did you use the jel for their gums

on a day to day basis, they like teething rings and frozen wahscloths but last night, neither would console him

We have never used the Gel but would consider it if anyone posts that it really works. I keep reading that it really doesn't do a whole lot to help b/c it is washed of so quickly from all the drool. Also it seems like it would only help the gums where the tooth is about to pop through which doesn't seem to bother my boys as much as the pain that radiates to their jaws and ears. When my boys are cranky or screaming from it we use the Hylands Teething Tablets or Motrin. If they have had a bad day of it or a few bad previous nights I go ahead and give them a couple tablets before bed or a dose of Motrin and it really seems to help.

Hopefully someone else can explain how the gel does.

James has been soooo dang cranky since he began teething, baby Orajel works like a charm! I love that stuff. It tastes hideous but it works quickly. I use it in conjunction with teething tablets so I'm sure that has something to do with it. I use Baby Orajel liquid, very berry flavor.

We use baby orajel, its awesome! THe babies make the funniest faces though when we put it on but it works. i even managed to get some on my lips by kissing a baby right after putting it on her, well that part of my lip numbed up so it works

Yes, I did and still do at one, they have about 16 teeth now so...What also helps is teething tablets you can get at BRU. Teething is usually sudden pain and screaming and nothing seems to soothe them. The tablets stop the pain and calm them, they will ususally get tired and seem sleepy or fall asleep, which mine did alot, if that's the problem. GL!

My dentist said not to... it can irritate the gums so severe as to cause burns. He said if its honestly that painful give him tylenol.

I guess different dentists, pedi's will have different opinions. My boys have already been to the dentist twice also since they had gotten so many teeth so rapidly and they said it was pefectly fine to use the oragel, I have never had any problems with it but if you choose not to use it try the tablets, they melt instantly.

    when my boys were teething,
my dentist said that orajel actually has a stimulant in it -
it works like a charm but when it wears off the pain is worse -
he told me to use tylenol

I have always heard that you shouldn't use too much orajel as it can numb their throat.

I personally use the orajel. We tried Tylenol & it didn't seem to help. I tried it out on myself, though, and it does numb pretty good! I would only use a tiny bit & I don't do it very often.
