my 21-mos-old has had diarrhea for a week (1 or 2 times a day). Besides that, he is perfectly fine and happy. But getting them on a bland diet this long (I can sneak milk into his twin's cup though) has been rough. Every time I try milk or something normal, he has diarrhea. Has this happened to anyone with molars? I keep trying to look in his mouth - but no luck. Did you keep giving the brat/bland diet? The on call doc this weekend wasn't concerned at all.

Mine just went through this a month or two ago. Both of them had it though! I do believe ours was molars, although its hard to get them to actually open their mouths and look very well. Same thing though, diarrhea for 7-10 days, 1-4 times a day, but no other symptoms at all. I really didn't change their diet too much, so I'm not sure if the BRAT diet will help or not.

Good Luck! I hope it clears up soon!

Mer, I had to buy lactaid so that my son, who was begging for milk, could have milk along side his sister. You can buy it in quarts in the 2%!! I recommend it.

Also, get some acidophillous (sp?) they sell it in the pharmacy for kids. You can sprinkle it in applesauce and yogurt!!!

I have one still having some incidents after a REALLY bad fever over the weekend etc. So I feel your pain!

My guys had their first diarrhea tummy bug last month. They had 12 hours of fever and frequent diarrhea for 24 hours followed by a week + of sporadic diarrhea. Once they were past the frequent diarrhea, I gave them their normal food and let the virus run its course. They were eating well, drinking lots of water, and happy between episodes. If you weren't changing their diapers, you'd never know they were sick after the first day. I can't imagine trying to get them to eat that bland food the entire time... especially when it didn't seem to make any difference at all.

Mine had sickness and diarrhea for nearly two weeks and my doctor didnt seem that concerned either. He just said a bland diet and try not to give milk just water or juice. Hope he gets better soon x

We had pretty much the exact same experience, only throw in vomiting with the fever and our diarrhea was HORRID (I was changing a muddy diaper about every 15 minutes) for 3 days, then sporadic (but equally nauseating diarrhea) for a full week beyond that.

We kept things as bland as possible for as long as possible, then slowly reintroduced things. I found yogurt was okay LONG before they could tolerate the milk. They forgot all about missing their milk when we blended up a yogurt smoothie for them.

I guess for me it would depend on whether it was really bad diarrhea. Is it like yellow water that won't be contained by a diaper, or just runny poops? Does it seem to bother him? Is he getting a bad diaper rash from it?

If it's really bad, I'd stick with the bland diet for awhile longer. It is a big pain, but if you reintroduce milk and other difficult foods too soon, you lose more ground that you gained.

But if he's just having runny poop a couple of times a day, but it stays in the diaper and doesn't seem to bother him that much, I'd probably treat him as if he's not really sick (except carry lots of extra diapers around, just in case).

Great topic... I have actually been dealing with this since November 30th. Last night my son was up from 9-1am vomiting every 15minutes this after just getting over a week of diarrhea. His brother had the same thing and also vomited in his crib the other night. The nurses have been telling me BRAT, oatmeal baths/lotion (my sons skin was burnt from the diarrhea) today she told me to take them to the ER for evaluation to check hydration levels and to rule out a bacteria..I decided to contact their Pedi through his direct email. Their demeanor is fine, their eating is fluctuating but they have no fever it's just the diarrhea or vomiting is not going away.

He told me I did not need to take them to the ER...they don't have dehydration symptoms and I was concerned about IV etc if it wasn't needed..He told me no milk until Friday (I am to email him and let him know about vomit/diarrhea) he suspects a Milk allergy or Salmonella as young children are extremely susceptable to it and we have had chicken in the past few weeks. My boys were allergic to Milk and Soy and were on hypoallergenic formula as infants, although they have been fine with cow's milk the last year he said it is possible the allergy is creeping up again. Anyway I guess I won't know anything until Friday he would like to do a stool/blood sample to rule both out.

We had it too. We did the BRAT diet for a bit but then it really wasnt helping so we just went back to everything we were eating minus the milk. I put them on the lacto-free formula per the Ped since we were just in the middle of the transition to milk when they got this nasty virus. Slather the Desitin!!!
