My husband had a friend who worked was an electrician at a huggies factory and he was able to give us about 1,000 diapers to start us off. These were all preemie diapers, which were good for us since our girls were preemies and were little for a while. They lasted us for about two months maybe (I could be wrong on the time, but they didn't last as long as we thought they would). However, I know a lot of babies don't stay in preemies that long, but ours did. Then family members would bring over a box of diapers everytime they came to visit. I think we were going through about a big box a week. By this time they were in regular diapers.

    Lots. :D
I'd get at least four of the big old boxes of the newborn size and one of the preemie size. If they are preemies, they won't stay in them for long, and all you have to do if you get in a pinch is fold the top down on the newborn ones, and they'll get by til you get to the store for more preemie size. Plus, there's the fact that if they're super preemie, you'll be in the hospital for awhile, and by the time you come out they'll be into newborn size, or at least close to it.

Like Rachel, we were really lucky, since we do alot of work for Proctor and Gamble, and they gave us a years worth of diapers as our baby gift.

I was wondering the same thing... glad someone posted this question.

I'm thinking maybe I should go out and buy stock in a diaper company!

I bought so far 2 boxes but this is my calculation.
during the day one baby will use at least 6-7 diapers. the maximum 8
    so 2 babies - 16 diapers.
I checked my son was 10 lbs by the end of the first month but he was born 7lb9oz so twins would use it I think at least 1,5 months.
    16diapers * 45 days = 720 diapers
this is around 8-9 boxes (84 diapers in each)

I agree with a PP that you will go through lots of diapers. If you do stock up on a bunch of one size, I would keep your receipt so you can exchange them for a different size. My kids only stayed in newborn diapers for a week or so and then we moved onto Size 1 diapers. If I remember correctly, we went through 8-10 diapers/day/kid when they were really little. Start asking family and friends to save diaper coupons for you. There have been a ton in the newspaper circulars lately. I also traded coupons on Craigslist. If you use Pampers, save Huggies coupons and ask to trade. Someone will.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy.

I wish I'd remembered some advice a coworker gave us once. From the time you find you are pregnant buy a package of diapers every paycheck. Keep the reciepts in case you need to exchange them.

One girl did just that and plenty of diapers but she had a singleton. Wish I'd been buying two packs all along now! Guess I'll start hitting Sams when I see the peri's.

    Thanks for the great post!

When we found out we were pregnant we our first son we starting buying a pack of diapers everytime we went to walmart, target or babies r us. We were stocked up on several sizes when he was born. It was nice not worrying about buying diapers for a few months after he was born.

Right when I found out we are having twins this time I starting stocking up! I'm also telling people when they ask what we really need I tell them diapers along with other things.. I'm estimating 8 to 10 diapers a day for each baby....

When we brought our girls home they sometimes went through 12 diapers a day each! If you figure feeding about 8 - 9 times a day (change pretty much every feeding--once they start pooping they are ALWAYS poopy for a while), we would change before feeding to wake them up so they could eat, but sometimes they would poop during the feeding, so they would have to be changed after. It seemed like for the first month the diapers were just flying out of the box! My girls were little (4#7 oz and 5#10 oz), but we never bought preemie diapers, just newborns and folded them down (funny to think about now). I seem to remember we had about 300+ diapers on hand when they were born. I live in a small town, so we use diapers.com and I love them! You get an order within 2 business days and they have great prices--plus they get delivered right to your door.

I had one package of preemies and I never used them. The Newborn diapers lasted for a month I think. At first the boys went through 10+ diapers a day. They pooped a lot in the beginning. What we did to prepare for diapers was price it out and find the place that sells them the cheapest with the best selection. In my area, BRU was the cheapest with the best selection. We put $100 every two weeks on gift cards. By the end of the pregnancy, we had $1200+ in gift cards.

I know when my son was a newborn, he was changed every 2 hrs, so you would need a lot

I better get to buying! I've been putting it off because I didn't want to be stuck with diapers the babies may react too (my youngest can only wear Pampers) but if I save the receipts maybe they will take them back if need be.

Thank you so much for all the responses. It really put things into perspective. For those of you that are expecting I have been pricing pampers swaddlers for the last few weeks. So far Sam's had the best price but I did get a great deal from diaper.com they had a sale the other day for 15% off of plus an extra $10.00 off if it was your 1st order. I'm wishing now that had ordered 4 boxes instead of two!!

I read one book on twins that said right at first you will need 10 diapers a day per twin. So in 10 days that's 200 diapers! The number of diaper us use will decrease after they get older. But for the first few months you can count on using a ton of diapers...time to buy stock.

We have 8 boxes (84 count) of newborn sized diapers we got as gifts. I didn't buy preemie because I figured that if we needed them, I would send DH to Target and buy a bunch rather than deal with returning/exchanging. Yes, it's a lot of diapers, and it does go down after the first month or two...but that is precisely the reason I plan on cloth diapering once the first 2-3 months of chaos begins to settle down. When I realized the sheer volume of diapers twins would need, and did the research on how CD'ing is totally different than it ever was for our parents, I thought we'd give it a shot. I knew that starting with twin newborns and CD was just a recipe for disaster, so I plan on using disposables for the first few months and then moving on to CD...I figure that the worst case scenario is that I sell my CD on ebay if it doesn't work for us! But, to be honest, I think it will be fine...

Oh, and you might want to check (daily) www.babycheapskate.com She keeps track of diaper deals/coupons so that you know when to stock up, etc...
