Every day one of the babies does this to me. I put them down for their nap & then I get in the shower. By the time I get out, they will be asleep & the minute I walk in to check on them I can tell from the smell that one of them has done it again - poopy diaper & sound asleep. I have tried waiting to put them down, waiting to get in the shower, nothing seems to work. I swear, it's like they do it on purpose. ;) Anyway, that raises the question - Do I wake them? Risk them not going back to sleep? Or let them sleep & risk a red, sore bum? Neither of mine are prone to diaper rash (haven't had a single case of it since they were born) but still it just seems wrong to leave them that way. What would you do??

Norah does this... I change her and pray she stays asleep! I worry about diaper rash because I don't do A&D at every diaper change.

LOL - they KNOW when to go, right? I would probably let them sleep a little while - Colby will wake up and cry when he's got a poopy diaper but Kellen will not. He's funny - he just sleeps right thru it, usually with a cute little grin on his face like he's the happiest baby on earth. I don't bother him when he gets like that. i figure if he's uncomfortable with the poopy diaper he will let me know, and so far that's worked - no diaper rash!!!

I don't change them if they're still asleep -- I let them sleep. Never wake a sleeping baby is the mantra in this house (except to eat during the newborn stage)! I would change them first thing upon waking, though. Mine don't sleep for very long at a time and we haven't had rash problems.

Mine tend to have nap poops as well. I NEVER wake them up because of a poop. If they are uncomfortable then they will wake up and let you know. I say let them sleep and enjoy your shower!

I change mine. Jenna does this all the time, more at night than at nap. I think sometimes she has to be totally relaxed to poop. But she also usually cries after she poops and wants to be changed. Either way, both of mine will sleep through changing a diaper.

I only change them at nap if they are awake still and then lay them back down. Unless there was a bad rash going on, I would leave it.
Also, if this happens routinely, I would make it a habit to put rash cream on at naps.

I just slather with vasoline before bed so that their little bums are protected from everything. I don't wake to change diapers!

I haven't read the responses yet, I'm a little pressed for time. But as soon as I read your subject line, my first thought without pondering the question was, "Let them sleep!!!!" For me, unless they were rolling in a puddle (or worse), I just let them sleep. Besides, if they were sleeping, I probably would be asleep too.

Oh, and I use a dab of A&D religously at every diaper change. More at night.

i am like you and hate to let them stay in it but if they are sleeping i dont wake them. Lather up with some oinment and it will be fine. ;) Of course i have no issues with diaper rashes...

I too let mine sleep. They don't seem to be bothered yet by messy diapers. I never know they have one until I smell it or look for it! But i don't like risking them not going back to sleep, and if they don't complain, I would wait.

Let them sleep! I feel like sleep is more important than a poopy diaper. You can deal with diaper rash, but a screaming baby is another thing.

I don't check on them while they're sleeping and risk waking them. If I smell poop, I change it. But I'm never around to know if they've pooped in their sleep!
