i've noticed that periodically river will get a diaper rash and there will be blood on the wipes when i wipe his bum. it's not coming from the BM but from around the anus like the skin is raw. i use destin ointment and it usually goes away but this is the second time this has happened. is this a severe diaper rash and is it a part of teething (which the doctor confirmed they were doing)?

Does he have nasty diaper rash that is bleeding? If not, he might have a fissure. One of mine had this and we used some Nystatin cream prescribed by the Ped to take care of it.

i don't think it's a fissure because he hasn't been straining to poop but that's the only way i know how you can get a fissure is from straining. it's more like a rash with tiny spots all over it around his anus that bleed. it doesn't happen often (only twice actually) and only when it's a really messy poop that requires a lot of wiping to make sure his butt is clean.

If there's lots of tiny spots around, you probably need to make sure you're putting some diaper rash cream on it. For regular diaper rash, you can use things like desitin, triple paste, etc. But, if you're noticing it's not getting better with that, it could be yeast which can happen especially with frequent messy diapers. You can try a bit of over the counter yeast cream (aka Lotrimin for athletes foot) and put a thin layer of that on the affected areas. A lot of times yeasty rashes can bleed. My other thought was if they maybe had an internal hemorroid or something, but now that you mention the little red dots, I bet it's from the skin just getting a bit raw from wiping it and being so sensitive.

We use Pinkxav for diaper rashes and it clears up overnight! The stuff is awesome! Anyways, I would also recommend just wiping his booty with warm washcloths/paper towels until its gone:)

Diaper rashes are very common when babies are teething, due to all the saliva they are swallowing. Aquaphor (sp?) has always worked wonders on my kids but I also keep butt paste and triple paste on hand at all times. If it doesn't go away it could possibly be a yeast rash thingy and then you have to use a special cream.

I hate when they have diaper rashes!

My kids usually have runny poos and are prone to diaper rash when teething due to all the drool. If what your DS has is a yeast infection, like MLH recommended you can use Lotrimin, my pedi recommended to use it for 4 times a day. I also would not use wipes but warm paper towels and let them air dry. Given the fact that he is bleeding, though, I would put a call into your pedi...they might want to check him out.
