We are on day 6 of OMG diaper rash. We have tried Dr. Smiths, A&D, and most recently Boudreax's butt paste. So now he not only has pitiful diaper rash, but now a very dry bum. For the last 3 days we have changed him and re-slathered every hour. Nada.

So, bring on your best remedy. There has to be a miracle cure...

i had the same problem even to go so far as raw little bum bum:( My ped gave me calmoseptine and her horrible diaper rash cleared up within 2 days! the bleeding stopped and it didnt make her scream when we had to change her-i also used warm water and a cloth instead of wipes to lessen the pain.

My DD had a terrible diaper rash when she was only a couple of weeks old. My pedi told us to use warm wet paper towels to wipe her, then dry her completely and put on some Mylanta (liquid antacid) on her bum and dry that, then diaper her. It was an extremely long process but it completely saved her poor bum. It only took one day for it to look much better. GL!

I would try buying some lansinoh or target brand cleansing cloths to wipe bottom's with (they are in a purple package). Also try gentle mist spray. You can buy it at walgreens. It is awesome! Between the two, my babies poor bottoms were perfect in 2 days! They had been on the point of blistering!

when my daughter was very young she got a rash that was so severe her skin actually peeled in places... it was horrible, and she was in a lot of pain... my ped told me it could be similar to a yeast infection in women and prescribed for me to mix 1 part lotrimin a/f with 1 part hydrocortisone... i would squeeze a little of both onto my finger and mix it together before applying... and after trying EVERYTHING else... this actually worked... i have used it at other times as well with great results... good luck... we've all been there

We used a combination of A & D ointment and pure lanolin (i.e. Lansinoh). I really believe it's the pure lanolin that did the trick. (A & D has some lanolin in it) We were also told that direct air is best so if possible...let him go diaperless for a while. We put out a blanket/bedspread and let them roll around at that age. This meant a lot of laundry, but it really helped.

We have had our share of rashes over the years, and I find that soaking them in the tub a few times a day really helps. Don't use wipes, use a warm washcloth instead and make sure the bummy is dry before applying ointment. I like butt paste and A & D when the rash is really bad b/c desitin has menthol and camphor and can burn.

My 2 yo had such a severe rash that she required an RX of silvadine, which is normally used for burns.

I posted awhile back what my mom told me to do. Let the child soak in Dreft powder detergent 1/2-1 cup as long as they will in the tub or sink. Kicked my DS's diaper rash within a couple days. I asked here on TS what it was about the Dreft some people said it was the baking soda in it. So you could just try baking soda. I wouldn't hesitate to try Dreft again if I needed to. Also when we had slivers as kids she would have us soak that part in Dreft.

Original Desitin. Has to be original. It works SO well! Sofia had bad diaper rash- nothing was working and this made it better in 1 day.

Triple Paste was the ONLY thing that cured DD's poor raw bum (antibiotic acid poop from hell)....other than that regular A&D ointment or original Desitin (in the purple tube - not the creamy stuff) work the best...

You could make a paste of baking soda and water. It should help to sooth it and take the redness out. GL.

I was trying everything to try to get rid of both girl's rashes. They started drooling a lot, so lots of poopy diapers. I went to the dr. yesterday and she said it was yeast. When there are red bumps, it's yeast. Now, I know why nothing was working. She told me to use Lotrimin. We'll see if it works. Also, to let them air dry for a while.

When one of my girls had a bleeding diaper rash, here is the protocol that the ped recommended (which worked):

    - Soak for 10 minutes twice a day in a lukewarm bath with a packet of Domeboro (astringent powder -- you can buy it over the counter).
    - Make sure the butt is totally dry before diapering.
    - Smear a very thin layer of yeast medicine (Lotrimin or something else with clotrimazole in it) on the skin, then cover with a layer of Aquaphor. (Our ped also has a prescription compound that they call "Max's Magic Mush," named after someone's kid -- it's basically like Butt Paste with a yeast medicine added in, and something to make it a thick paste consistency. We use this if we have some, but if not, we use the yeast/Aquaphor combo.)
    - Try to let the baby go diaper-free for at least 5 minutes a few times a day.
    - When changing diapers, don't use wipes -- use a washcloth with lukewarm water, and wipe very gently. If water alone isn't getting the poop off, use Cetaphil liquid cleanser and then just gently wipe it off with water.

If the rash does not get a lot better in 72 hours, they may need prescription medication.

Thanks for all the good ideas! We ended up by the pedi for flu shots and I mentioned the rash. They looked at his poor bum and prescribed a very expensive (> $40!) diaper cream to use twice a day. As several of you mentioned we have gone to wet cloths instead of wipes. He is also getting a soak in the tub twice a day and crawling around naked in our garden tub until he dries. Hopefully it will clear up in a couple of days!
