Diaper Rash or Yeast Infection?

I suppose I've been pretty lucky not to have diaper rash issues til now...yesterday, my little girl was red in her butt when we wiped her---not too visible unless you "opened" her cheeks...Today my husband called me at work and said her butt had a sort of puss in it...Kinda freaked me out. When I got home and changed her for the bath, she had a little bit of a discharge in her butt, but I don't know if I'd call it puss, which is making me wonder if it's yeast infection? She's quite sensitive when we wipe, and he said she pooped 5 times today--all the hard little nuggets...I'm also wondering if her butt's just irritated from pushing so hard to get the nuggets out? I got lots of pears and prunes before coming home to try and "loosen" her up, and we put Desitin all day...I let her sit in warm water in the bath for a while, and she was more calm when I put the Desitin and diaper....I think the hard nuggets are a result of all the bananas and rice cereal we fed them to solidify them when they had the stupid stomach flu....can't win! I'm just wondering if anyone out there has had the yeast infection thing, and what it was like.

Any advice or experiences would be appreciated!!!

Hmmm...I think I would call the pedi. I haven't experienced this but I'm hoping there are others here that can help you. We once had some blood when one of the girls had hard poops and was straining and that scared the heck out of me. I hope you get an answer!

When my babies had a yeast diaper rash, theirs was bright red in the diaper area with red spots in outlying areas. They didn't didn't have any pus, really. A few days of Nystatin cleared it up. I would keep up with the Desitin and warm baths and changing her diaper all the time - commando for part of the time if that is doable.

    Good luck!

Sounds like a yeast infection. I would probably call the ped. My DD just got over a yeast infection. She was on antibiotics for an ear infection and I think that triggered the yeast infection. The dr. put her on a perscription med. cream.

Victoria also had a bad diaper rash, I wiped her with a soft warm cloth rather than wipes. And applied thick vaseline and yeast infection ointment on a regular basis. It cleared up within a day. I applied the ointment first and then lots and lots of vaseline to lock in the ointment so that it does not rub off in the diaper. Good luck wit that.

If it is a yeast infection, you can add baking soda to her bath water to help soothe, and also my pedi. recommends trying Tinactin (foot creme that is over the counter and helps yeast infections - I thought it was crazy - but it worked). The red slightly raised dots around the area are what the pedi. office said to look for on a yeast infection.

If it is red around her anus and raw, I think it would be due to a food allergy. My girls get yeast infections that are red and bumpy which can clear up in a day with nystatin. They also have many food allergies and if they eat something they shouldn't their area around their anus turns red and can have raw open sores. When they were little and on soy milk their whole area around their anus was raw. Nothing would clear it up until we switched their formula. They now get it a little if they eat something they shouldn't and we just have to eliminate that food and wait for it to clear up. Destin does no good.

Thanks for all the replies....this morning it was still red, but hardly any discharge....She never had any kind of bumps, just bright red. I will try the baking soda tonight, and keep up with the desitin and see if it clears up. I know I had a nasty yeast infection right before I had them, and what worked best for me was a warm bath with white vinegar mixed in, but I'm a little nervous of doing that with her since she's so little!!!!

It could be a food allergy. Try an oatmeal bath. That helped my oldest. If that doesn't clear up in a few days it could be yeast. My dd got yeast all the time. I was constantly running to the doctor for Nystatin. The last time I asked the ped for a large dose and they gave me a big tube. I lost it after using it only a few times. I called the nurse who told me to just go get some anti-fungal foot cream (wha wha whaaat?). Sure enough she was right. I think they call it Lotrimar. Or you can buy the off brand at CVS or Walmart. You could try that first too. GL!

We just got over a bad yeast rash with my singleton. She had a really really bad case. Her whole bottom was bright red and she had it under her neck on her chest, back and head. Nothing would control. The doctor put her on Diflucan and had me use Lotrimin AF on all the affected areas. Slowly but surely she got better. It really helps it to let the baby just air out and stay as dry as possible. I would lay her in her crib for a while with no diaper on. Plus, I would change her diaper often. Hope your baby gets better!
