My 6 month old daughter had an ear infection and was put on amoxicillin for 10 days....the ear infection is fine, but she has diarrhea and now a pretty bad diaper rash. i am thinking it is because of the medicine? But she has been off of the amoxicillin for 2 days now and she still has the diarrhea and diaper rash. Does anyone know if this sounds normal and, if so, how long I can expect her to have diarrhea? I have just been caking the zinc oxide ointment on. Thanks in advance for any advice!

My girls were on an antibiotic and Sarah ended up getting a yeast infection. It looks a lot like a bad diaper rash with little tiny bumps. Antibiotics sometimes cause that. If it is a yeast infection you can put plain yogurt on it. Of course my girls are older, but I had some monastat cream and my sister-in-law, who is an RN and works with infants, said I could put that on it as well. I did, and it clear right up. Don't know if that is what she has, but if it gets worse you may ask your pedi about it.

I'd call your doctor because it seems to me that this could be due to loose stools and will resolve after that clears up or it could be from yeast. Sometimes after being on antibiotics babies (and adults) get yeast infections. So, if you can decribe it to your pedi then she/he may be able to tell you how to best proceed. Some of these diaper rashes also just need some air time and less goopy creams on them and they'll heal up faster.

    Good luck. Keep us posted.

I bet it's a yeast infection. My girls had this when they were very young and I put lotrimin and monistat on their butts...cleared it up right away!

YEAST INFECTION! Absolutely. An overpopulation of yeast will cause not only the infection (bad rash with bumps almost looking like blisters), but will also affect the bowel system causing loose stools. Poor baby! Call Ped. immediately! Unfortunately with the holiday you might have problems getting ahold of someone. Untreated, however, yeast will continue to populate--very quickly. One thing you can do it let the rashy area get lots of air. Yeast thrives on dark, moist areas.

By Prescription we were given a cream called "Clotrimazole Cream USP, 1%"--at least I think it was by prescription--maybe it was over-the-counter. The thing is though, we couldn't get it right away and so the NICU nurses had us using a cream called "Athlete's Foot Cream"--not kidding! On the tube it also read "Clotrimazole Cream USP, 1%". It's an antifungal cream, so it worked too. Actually, I just looked at the ingredients on both tubes, and they contain exactly the same thing..the 1% of that very big word.

It's Sunday--maybe you can head to a walmart or target or something and just look in their medicine section. If it's not yeast, putting the cream on will not hurt the baby. If it is, you should notice an improvement within 24 hours by using the cream.

Yeast infections (if you've never had one) are AWFUL! They can be incredibly painful if not treated. Poor baby--and poor you!

    Best of luck,

    Robynn

--Oh yeah, a Dr. once told me that Amoxicillin is the worst culprit of all the antibiotics for causing a yeast infection. When I go to the Dr. I always tell them I'm allergic to it, so they don't even think about prescribing it. Of course, I had to learn the hard way....

I think it is due to the meds. Here's what we did for the worst diarrhea and diaper rash in our babies' history....

I used over the counter yeast infection cream (called girlie goo in this house)

Ok, at diaper changes, let the baby air dry as long as possible. Or use a corn starch based powder and get her all dry. Then sorta wipe the powder off. THEN put the girlie goo on and rub in as best you can (all over the WHOLE rash, not just girlie parts) THEN AS THICK AS POSSIBLE....rub on the DESITIN ORIGINAL!!!

    Good luck!!! [IMG]
