Okay, this might sound silly but I, and my DH, are completely clueless when it comes to diapers. We wanted to start buying some things for the twinkies but didn't know where to start so I suggested we start buying some diapers and wipes (since I know those will be extremely necessary for a looooong while).

So my question is: How do I shop for dipaers? We don't know if we're having girls or boys or one of each, so are the newborn diapers made for both? And I know I've read that the first few months you can go through as many as 10-20 changings a day, so should we buy a lot of newborn diapers and some step 1 (or whatever the next level up is)? And how likely is it that we would need premie diapers if the twins are born at full term (37 weeks or more)? I'm just wondering if twins are still considered premies because they're born earlier than singletons.

And, final question, which brand of diapers have proven to be the best fit? (in your experience)

    TIA!

We used Pampers Swaddlers in the beginning. Newborns for the first month or so and then moved up to the size 1's. We started using Costco brand when they moved into a size 3, and love them. It all depend on how big they are when they are born and fast they put on weight. I would not buy too many of the preemie size.

I haven't had mine yet but I have bought diapers. I have bought the Pampers swaddlers and as far as I know they don't have different ones for boys and girls that early. The preemie size only goes up to 6 lbs and newborn go up to 10lbs. I will be delivering my twins on Thursday (exactly 37 weeks) and they are expected to be around 6lbs. That said I would wait to buy preemie diapers but you could probably safely buy several packs of newborn diapers and then the next size up. If they are born at 37 weeks I am pretty sure they aren't considered preemies but that doesn't really matter when you're buying diapers. Congratulations on your twins!!!

These are our firsts, but we've bought diapers to be prepared.

This is what we have; two pkgs of preemie diapers (a Huggies @30ct and a Pampers Swadler @20ct). If need be we'll just eat the cost or exchange these-it comes to like $12 for the two so we weren't concerned. At the time we only found preemie diapers in a town 30 minutes away and not in our own town-so we wanted to have some on hand.

We also have about 9 Newborn pkgs. 3 are open and 6 are not, most are Huggies or Pampers Swadlers but there is one Target brand as another msg board I post on like 1/2 the people on their said they liked them.

Then we have a box of 1/2s and 2 pkgs. These are all Huggies.

We have 1 pkg of 2 diapers and this is the Parents Choice brand.

I think Pampers Swaddlers are the best when it comes to newborns. Once they get older though pretty much all diapers are the same but I like Pampers and Huggies. Just remember dont open the packages because they grow faster than you think and you dont want alot of diapers that they have grown out of and you can no longer return. :D
Remember to sign up on pampers and huggies websites, or any other diaper brands you think of (and formula - even if you are going to breastfeed its still a good idea to do it) they send you coupons almost every 3 or 4 weeks!!!

We have a few packs of preemies, 10 packs of newborns and 12 packs of 1's & 2's (most were gifts) in miscellaneous brands. With ds we used Walmarts White Cloud brand from newborn all the way to size 5. We were very pleased with them. They were very cheap and comparable to Luvs.

Hi there! our twins are now 2 1/2 weeks old, and here's how we've felt about diapers so far. First of all you will for sure need the preemie size (or at least the up to 10 lb size) for awhile. Ours are still in the NB size. Secondly, pampers swaddlers are significantly better IMO. They are softer and less bulky on their tiny little bums. They are worth any extra price for this stage. People have different opinions on diapers down the road..but we've found with our 2 year old we experimented with tons of brands and found that we had far fewer blowouts and leaks with pampers in general...but that was just our experience. Good luck getting ready for your little ones!

Also prefer Pampers Swaddlers when they are little. My DD was 6.11 and the NB size fit her perfectly; I would think they would fit a baby 5lbs+ just fine.

I loved the pampers swaddlers with my son. He was only 5lbs when we brought him home so those were perfect for months. I'd say don't get tooo many of the small ones till you know the size. I get our wipes from Costco... great deal.

I like Huggies. but we used WhiteCloud from Walmart for my DD. They are the cheapest and I actually liked them until she was mobile.

All I can say is don't buy too many of the smaller sizes... and don't buy too many of the same brand until you find out what "works" for your kids... We HATE Huggies in this house... they leaked for all my kids boy or girl... We LOVE PAMPERS... hardly ever had any leaking issues with them no matter what age...but there are women here who will say the exact opposite (although I do run across a lot more women who dislike Huggies than those who dislike Pampers...) A close second for us was Luvs... but the for me the cheaper brands needed to be changed more frequently...so I found myself going through 1/3 as many to twice as many.. so the price difference wasn't a whole lot... Plus when I figured out the cost difference per year of the cheap brands versus the expensive brands, even if you didn't use more of the cheap ones, you still are only saving 100-200$ per year by going cheap....totally not worth a thousand diaper changes and leaks IMHO... plus extra laundry from all those leaks... you kind of have to find what works for your kid, so I wouldn't stock up too much... Maybe get a large package of newborn and a large box of size 1.... And leave it at that until you find out what works well on them... I still remember with my older dd someone gave us a huge box of Huggies... and I HATED every day that I had to use those things... I wouldn't even use them at night b/c they were so bad... I was so happy the day that that box was empty!!

Thanks everyone! Its seems the majority here love the Pampers Swaddlers so I may go buy some of those this weekeend. And I'll stock up on some wipes, and other little necessary things. I've also heard that bottles are just one of those things you have to test try with babies (because some like some brands and hate others). Is this true too?

My son refused to even try a bottle so I had no choice but to breastfeed for 11 months till he took a cup well enough. Which was fine I stay home with him so no big deal. My youngest daughter would only take Avent bottles. I dont know though, if you dont breastfeed if kids really know the difference in bottles or not. I just know Hailey liked Avent.

Mine were early and were in preemie for a while. We used Huggie's Supreme preemies, like the NICU and later Huggie's Supreme Newborn when they outgrew their preemie. Matilda is chunky and is outgrowing the HS newborns soon so we are moving her to the Huggie's size 1 next. I honestly wouldn't buy diapers ahead of time regardless. You'll get tons at your shower and they really is no way to tell what and how many you'll need.

Wipes you'll also get tons of at your shower. I had MANY different brands but my fave and the one that seems to cause the least irritation and is the overall value is the Parent's Choice Newborn Gentle or Organic Cotton wipes. I also prefer their box to the other boxes. Pretty cheap too, considering.

Here's how it ended up working out in my house:

With my son...at newborn stage...everything leaked except pampers swaddlers. I had gotten a lot of huggies in different sizes at my showers, but he was never able to wear them without leaking. Once he came out of the swaddlers, he went into the White Cloud brand from wal-mart and has been ever since.

With my girls...they could pretty much wear anything from the getgo. We used up swaddlers and huggies that I'd bought on sale and shower gifts, then I put them on the White Cloud brand. No problems.

I'm thankful that all 3 of my kids were able to end up on White Cloud diapers...they're SO much cheaper than the other brands!

I wouldn't buy too many of the premie or newborn sizes...we never wore the premie size and only used like 1 bag of the newborn size before moving on to size 1. BUT all of my kiddos were larger than average at birth.

Best of luck to a safe and healthy pregnancy!

I've had friends tell me they like White Cloud and Luvs but I've heard lots of bad reports on Huggies and lots of people who weren't please with them--especially as much as they cost! We try to pick up a pack whenever we go to walmart and told our parents that they are welcome to help us stock up as well!

I loved Pampers swaddlers with my son as a newborn too--he was only 5 pounds 12 oz so he was in them for a while! I just kept using Pampers the whole time because everything else I tried leaked or broke him out (sensitive skin). Also, I couldn't use the scented wipes...they irritated his skin. I tried a lot of different bottles with him too because he was colicky at first, but when I switched to the Playtex bottles with the drop in liners he magically overcame his colic! They're so easy too! I also had to switch him to Carnation Good Start Soy after I stopped breastfeeding...
