We CD and have been using Diaper Champ pails. They seemed nice in the store, but turned out to be a major PITA - diapers and wipes are always getting stuck, and now that we're on a bigger size of cloth diapers, the whole pail flip thingy doesn't work at all.

Has anyone used just a regular flip-top trash can as a diaper pail? How is it for odor control? This is important because we have a small place and our changing stations are in the kitchen and our bedroom - and the babies eat lots of solids now. PU! :p

I don't know about the CD bit, but we have a diaper genie and I love it way better than the diaper champ (my mom has one for when the grandkids come to visit). With the diaper genie II you just push the diapers down into it, no flipping, twisting, or other crazy stuff. It is great for odor control, it's in our living room and you can't smell a thing (although we aren't really into solids yet).

I have a regular lift the lid pail. Well, two actually. One gets the poopy diapers and is in the bathroom. It gets two extra pre-washes. The other is by the changing table. I haven't noticed an odor problem except when it gets too full to close properly.

I use a regular flip top garbage can for my cloth diapers and I've never noticed a strong smell. I bleach it once a week though just to keep it smelling fresh.

Through trial and error we used the Diaper Dekor Plus...the most expensive diaper pail out there. We used it for our first child and my husband was OCD about keeping it clean and taking out the filled up bag. A year later, when we put our house on the market, our very honest real estate agent told us that for our first open house we needed to get rid of the diaper pail as the whole house had a "diaper smell". I boasted, "but we have the Diaper Dekor, our house cannot smell!!!".....I almost took offense as I am a neat/clean freak. Our noses were immune to the 'odor' I guess.

End result and BEST solution!..............all of those diaper pails dont do their job and they are a PITA and cost us, the consumer, more money in the end on replacement bags, etc. IT IS ALL MARKETING!

Just use your plastic grocery bags for your diapers.....they are free, you know you have a TON of them and throw your stinky diapers in them, knot the bag and go put it in your kitchen garbage or lidded trash can in your nursery. The bag seals out the smell and it is so much easier and cost effective to use.

Decorative storage idea!.....I wad the bags up and put them in a tissue dispenser on the shelf of the changing table and VOILA! Instant solution ladies :) Seals out the odor and is cost effective!

    Good luck! ~jillian

We just used a regular trash can with a lid in our upstairs bathroom for nightime changes. I put a couple of air fresheners in it and we emptied it about every 3-4 days. We always used the regular trash when we changed diapers downstairs and just took it out every night. We didn't use CD's though, so I don't know if that way is a lot stinkier or not. My trash can cost about $5 so that price was right up my alley!

We use a regular trash can, that we wash fairly often, and one of those airwick freshmatic automatic spray things. It sprays enough to get rid of the diaper smell, but not overpower the house.

We use cloth, too, and have been really happy with our dry pail's odor control performance (actually started out with the same pail as you but didn't stay with it for long for the same reasons!). Ours is just a Rubbermaid flip-top garbage can with a washable pail liner. I wash every other day (sometimes daily) but have gone 3 days and never had any issues. Our pail is right next to the couch in the main living area (out of necessity) and we are really picky about odors of all sorts... it is honestly no problem, other than an occasional stinky whiff when the lid is opened and a smelly poop is fresh in the pail-- that is honestly extremely rare and short-lived though. I recently started just sprinkling a little baking soda on the stinky poopy ones once in the pail-- it works great and totally eliminates the aforementioned stinky whiffs... and is a laundry booster, to boot! :D

Also... I don't dunk or spray my diapers, but I do dump the more "formed" stools (thanks to solids) in the toilet rather than the pail. Hope that's not TMI for anyone...!

Good luck-- hope it works out well for you!

When I CD DD I used a plastic garbage pail with snap down lid, we did dry pail style, it only smelled when I opened it, lol. I liked it b/c I could carry it down to the laundry like a hamper and rinse it out while the diapers went thru pre-rinse. I am using diposables for twins and for that I use step trash can with the removable insert, with deodorizing garbage bags which helps keep the odor down until it is opened anyway... :p

We got a large pet food storage container at Petco. It has a snap lid and I think snaps tighter than a garbage can with snap lid. We put a 13 gallon trash liner in it. We use disposibles but we go a week and then throw them away. We used to fill it up twice a week when the girls were babies. It is very stinky inside but doesn't smell when closed.

You might have your best luck with one of those stainless steel flip-top cans, with the removable inner plastic bucket. I used that when we CD'd, although I lined the bucket with a waterproof bag.

It wasn't too bad, and if you fold the bag over the edge of the bucket, the lid fits pretty tightly, creating a seal. We also put some charcoal filter or something inside, taped to the lid.

The plastic bucket did get stinky, and had to be washed every few days -- but overall, there was no major poop smell in the room. But then, we stopped CD'ing just before starting solids, so the poop wasn't that bad in the first place!

We still use the same garbage can, BTW, but now we do disposables -- and the PP's suggestion of tying off each diaper in a grocery bag is exactly what works for us. But, that doesn't work for cloth (unless you want to untie each bag before doing your laundry, LOL).

Well, I was looking for something to fill all the extra time I have on my hands!

Thanks for the input everyone! It's good to know that trash cans won't smell any more than a regular diaper pail. Time to go shopping...

I just use a waterproof bag with the girls and didn't even have a can. With Dax, we got the Safety 1st diaper pail that can either be opened all the way or just by flipping up the center hole and it works wonderfully for us. It holds about a load of diaper so I know it's time to do laundry when it is full. It also keeps all odor inside.
