does anyone know if diaper creams actually help heal diaper rash, or do they just prevent it?

The diaper cream helps to keep the area dry, so it does help heal it. But nothing works as well as their booty being cleaned by water and then aired out. What I normally do for diaper rash is let them run w/o diapers (if it's cold I put leg warmers on and a shirt but that's it). My pedi suggests using the reguar (not creamy) Desitin and calmoseptine, along with a lot of air!

I think it does both. However if we have a bad one I use a little Nystatin (prescription) underneath a layer of cream or vaseline.

I would think both. I swear by Aquaphor (my Pedi does too). If that doesn't clear it up or it's real bad I'll alternate that with Beadreauxs Butt Paste. It's usually all clear in less than a day.

I've used Dr. Smiths for the girls just a handful of times now and it works really well. I used it for my older DD too. It is hard to find sometimes though.

Im from the UK and I use a nappy cream from here called SUDOCREM and it is brilliant I totally swear by it. DD had really bad skin once after a poop, shortly after starting solids, and it cleared it up in no time. I use it all the time and neither baby has any problems. Sure they get a little red from poops but nothing serious.

I think it helps heal by preventing further rash. My doc always said put a THICK layer on, like your icing a cake. That way when they poop/pee it acts as a barrier on the skin. ALso ditch the wipes while they have a rash and just use warm washclothes in plain water. Air drying, even blowdrying on warm air is good (like after the bath).

I have found that warm water, a lot of air drying, and using Triple Paste does help against diaper rash. We normally will use Destin or Butt Paste daily to prevent it and that does help lessen the instance of it.

thanks for all the suggestions ladies! thankfully, we don't have any major diaper rash issues - just the odd bit of redness if i miss a dirty diaper. i was mostly wondering if putting diaper cream on AFTER the redness shows up is worth while or if it's just too little too late. seems like the consensus is that it's helpful. thanks again! :)

I love the butt paste; I think that is the best. I don't really care for the original Desitin because to me, it smells like fish guts. Then when I pick up the twins/play with them, thehy smell like fish guts.

The redness is all we usually have too. Balmex heals the redness pretty much by the next diaper change!

I love Boudreaux's Butt Paste. I use it as a preventative. At night, I smear a nice think layer on since they wear diapers longer at night and then a nice smear in the morning.

If we do get a rash (not just a little red from wearing a diaper too long), which we've had two in almost two years, my ped suggests (and it has always worked) at every diaper change putting a thin layer of Lotrimin (yes athletes foot cream) and triple antibiotic ointment then slather a heavy layer of vaseline. As most diaper rashes are bacterial or yeasty, you've covered all your bases. When we had to do this, it only took a couple of days to completely clear up.
