Lately DD has started FLIPPING OUT when we try to change her diaper. It doesn't happen all the time, but it seems to happen at least once a day about every day. She screams and howls and cries huge tears and tries to roll over and thrashes around like she's being electrocuted. One time it took me 10 MINUTES to get her into a diaper. Last night, DH and I TOGETHER could not get a diaper on her! We had to just let her go bare butt naked until bath time (and luckily she didn't pee all over the house).

I can't figure it out. It's not like anything bad has happened to her during a diaper change to give her bad associations. She's not crazy about being naked, so I don't think it's just that she doesn't want to get dressed again. And it's so sporadic - it's not like it always happens at a certain time of day, or only right before naps, or anything. There's no pattern.

And I am really at a loss as to what to do when she's like this! Any ideas what's going on and what to do about it?

This too shall pass :winking0009:  This was a difficult stage for me, dd is a breath holder and this is when it would occur most often :icon_eek: I think this about the age I always explained things and gave them notice. like "its diaper changing time....mommy is going to change Zach's diaper and then Molly is next.....oooohhhhh what fun diaper changing time is!!!!" But it worked sometimes :pardon: I also tried the toys during changes and still use that sometimes, but then they drop or throw it......

We've had that phase too. It's so annoying! If only we could reason with the babies and say, "you think you'd realize by now that if you lay still I can be done in a few seconds!" But alas, no such luck. I learned how to diaper my oldest while he stood up (or crawled away) because he was incorrigible. I have found that saving a special toy (or singing a special song) only during diaper changes helped buy me an extra minute without the thrashing. I swear a piece of tin foil will work wonders if I'm desperate (are they part raccoon---"oooh, shiny!")

Yes, give her something to distract her. My dd used to be bad for diaper changes. Now she's not so bad, but it is a phase.

I've tried giving her every extra-special thing under the sun, but when she gets like that, she just pushes it away! It's not just squirming, you'd think she was being tortured. :(

Hmm....we haven't dealt with it to *that* extent, so handing the kiddo a normally-taboo item has worked (thermometer, nail clippers, teething tablets bottle) for me.

I vaguely remember you guys don't do any TV, right? What about throwing a special DVD on the laptop -- Sesame Street or something that will keep her attention for two minutes? Heck, she might even look forward to diaper changes, LOL.

Barring that, I'm drawing a blank, if you've already used special toys and such....hope this phase passes sooner rather than later!

Oh my gosh, I HATE diaper changes! By the time I've got them both done I feel like I've wrestled an alligator!! :shok: The other day poop went EVERYWHERE- all over him, me, the changing pad... ugh, we ended up having to do an impromtu bath! Let's see, I've tried giving them stickers, but one just ate them, the other tore it up into pieces and was done with it. I've tried toys, one thing that will work about once a day is if I put their little pants on my head and shake my head making the legs fly all over the place. I sure hope it's a phase that'll pass! It's definitely NO fun! You have my sympathies! :drinks:

Add me to the usually wrestling and occasional freakout camp!

One thing I've tried when nothing else works is to blow raspberries on their bellies :) If they're stinky, I do it *before* opening up the diaper. It usually gets them giggling so they forget they were fighting and it goes much quicker. Doesn't always work, but often enough that I keep trying!
