Ugh, I change the diaper champ every day/every other day and it's not really doing its job! I thought it's suppose to hide the smell? I wipe it down daily with pinesol or fabuloso and it's still horrible! It makes their room smell like straight up poop! Any suggestions?

nope, just writing to say I feel your pain. Ours stink to high heaven, and we've tried everything (baking soda washes, baking soda at the bottom, spray odor eater stuff, cleaning with everything you can think of, air fresheners stuck to the side). Hope someone knows what to do.

I ended up throwing ours out when the boys were about 3 months old. Not only did it stink but we somehow managed to get the little rubber ring on the ball to come off completely making it even worse. I ended up buying a regular trash can with a lid and we use the oder bags to help with smell. It;s actualy better than the diaper champ ever was.

I use a regular garbage can with the flip up lid - you step on the bottom to flip up the lid. I use the garbage bags that have a lemon scent and I change the bag every night before bed. That room has never smelled bad, it works. I never heard any good things about diaper genies or diaper champs so I never had one.

Mine doesn't smell at all. It's even in our bedroom. It only smells for 2 minutes when we turn the handle but that's it... I'd blame the bags you're using, not the champ.

Yeah, I didn't have any issues with it smelling until after it was a year old.. I wasn't even changing the bags every day. Sorry..

The diaper champ stinks! Pun intended. We bought one ... and the big "sell" of it is that you can use any old bag you want! Well, then you can't blame the bags ... No matter what bag I use, the whole thing stunk!

We ended up going back to the diaper genie. Sure, I have to buy the refills, but it never stinks, and it is SO worth it! My kids are almost two, and I just love the thing!

I lysol it every day and empty it 3x/week. Every couple of months I take it outside and bleach it. I doesn't smell too bad, but I can't wait until I can put it out to the curb.

I use Glad bags with the odor shield (I think?). No problem at all. They're probably much cheaper than the genie refills too (I buy big boxes at BJs), and I only change the bag when it's full.

    *shrug*

It is seriously just AWFUL!!! I don't know a better way other than taking EVERY diaper out to the outside trash each time!

I actually removed it from the nursery and put it in our bathroom. We have to go in there anyway to wash our hands so why not. Only thing is now our bathroom stinks :bad:

Anyone have suggestions on odor control in the nursery? When changing poop, the smell lingers for a while and I hate having my babies sleep though that. I'm weary of deodorizers. Not sure what would be safe. Anyone??

I don't think it's actually the Diaper Champ but the bags you use. We use some kind of odor control garbage bags for it but also for every poopy diaper we put those in the individual green bag from BRU as well. http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3011096

Tie them up and place in the diaper champ. So, poopy diapers are basically in 2 bags. No problems with odor. We also use Febreze every time we change it. Works well.

Ours always smelled too. We wiped it out with Clorox wipes every time we changed the bag (every few days), but it was still yucky. We finally ditched it when my DDs were 2.5 and replaced it with a small plastic trash can. When that gets full, we just dump the diapers in the kitchen trash (which goes out every day or two). It's so much easier -- both because we don't have to mess with the Champ and because it's small, so it forces us to take the diapers out practically once a day. I wish we had switched much earlier.

I also think lids just keep the smell in and encourage it to build up, but that may just be me -- DH and I disagree about that.

As far as deodorizers in the nursery -- any kind of chemical scent you could use would be worse for the babies than the smell of poop. Yes, poop stinks, but it's not bad for us, and I seriously doubt the babies even notice it. Just get as much fresh air in there as possible (harder in the winter, I know).

I never got one because of all the odor complaints that I'd heard about. We empty our household trash enough that they just get thrown in with that...

We haven't had any trouble with ours. It stinks when you turn the handle and I am sick of that. We only empty it twice a week on trash days, but we both work. When we are home for more than a weekend it has to happen more often.

We bought a regular trash can too. It's huge & keeps the smells out better than the diaper champ did. Plus, it's so big that we don't need to empty it near as often & that is a relief!

Ours smells if it gets too full. I spray it with Lysol when I change the bag and I use the cheap bags that are scented vanilla. If we change it frequently, it's not too bad. It will only smell when you flip the handle for a minute or so.

I don't have the diaper champ but the diaper genie but another mom friend of mine gave me this tip, the car scents from yankee candle, tape one of them to the bottom of the genie or champ and that helps with the smell. We have not had any issues with the smell (other then when DH forgets to close it). Not sure if that will help you or not.

Not sure if they work in the diaper champ but I have a diaper genie for disposables and a diaper pail for cloth, and in both of them I bought the tide closet sachets that are sold at target in the aisle where they have laundry items like hangers and moth balls....They are little gel filled circles that have a vanilla lavendar scent...You can put them at the top of the diaper genie in the little empty space and it smells lovely...I actually look foraward to putting in a diaper!

You can get a 6 pack for $4 they last a while...in both my pails!
