Hi Ladies! I am 28 weeks prego with b/g twins and was told yesterday at my OB appt that I am anemic. Would anyone be able to suggest a natural/food based iron supplement? I was told to take 30mg's on top of the 30mg's that are already in my prenatal vitamin (by Rainbow Light Naturals).

Trying to avoid constipation! I have made it through this pregnancy with "everything" work fine in that department. My first and second pregnancies were with singleton's and I had horrible constipation and cannot believe I have dodged the constipation-bullet with my twin pregnancy! Thank God! :)

Thanks for your help! :) -jillian

I think dark leafy greens have alot of iron (spinach, kale, etc.), as does red meat and liver. I don't know if pregnant women are supposed to eat liver though, you may want to check on that one (if you could stomach it anyway). Anemia is nothing to mess around with, I was mildly anemic when I delivered, and then due to the blood I lost I became so anemic I needed a blood transfusion. Also, with the supplement I found eating alot of fiber and bananas helped with the constipation.

    Good luck.

I take IronSorb made by Jarrow formulas. I bought it from vitacost.com. They have many choices that are food based available.

I was also told I was anemic going into my last trimester and started taking iron supplements per the recommendation of my doctor. I didn't take anything "natural" in terms of a medication, but I did try to consciously eat more meat and spinach.

As xavier 2001 said, definitely take care of it. I wasn't as good as I should have been about the iron supplements and ended up losing quite a bit of blood during and after my c-section. My bp fell to a critical level 8 hours after the c-section, and I also had to get a transfusion.

Something to consider if you're looking for a "natural" route - ever consider acupuncture?

    Take good care of you!!!

I was ok with anemia most of this pregnancy. It is pretty common to be asked to take an additional iron supplement on top of the prenatals. My doctor is doing that with me. Take a stool softner or add fiber or eat prunes if you do have to end up taking more iron. I was so anemic after giving birth to my first baby. I lost a lot of blood and I was just so sick. The iron I took also constipted me, and I too would do ANYTHING to avoid that repeat performance. I didn't have a BM for several weeks after having my son. I was very sick and way past taking laxitives or an enema. TMI I know, but just be careful. I chickened out and stopped taking my extra iron pill, becasue dr. said I am not anemic. Well....I know what anemia feels like and I think I am again. SO I am back on that pill. Liver is good food for you...if you can tolerate the taste. I think it is yummy.

It was about 28 weeks for me too when my count was a bit low. I tried the high iron foods but it was not enough. Finally my Dr. just put me on an iron supplement. She gave me lots of free samples. Try asking for some.
