Does anyone have any experience with childhood diabetes.

Jessica has been cranky for a few weeks (just thought woz a stage) but started to notice the last few days she's drinking an awful lot, and urinating. Then today she just urinated 3 times on the floor a very lot and she looked shocked (this never happens).

Hubby has just taken her to the hospital, I just have a funny feeling about it being diabetes. I did call the health line 1st thinking could be a kidney infection, but usually that's a small amount of urine with pain, so doesn't really sound like.

Oh and couple of days ago, she threw up for about a day (virus), and on google/diabetes said diabetes can happen after a virus.

Anyways sorry for the long post any help/advice would be appreciated, I'm worried, just gonna put the jorja to bed and wait for the call.

Hope this makes sense. Would appreciate support/advice.

I am not familiar with diabetes in children, my Dad has had it for the last 25 years. I was going suggest doing one of the urine paper tests, I do these periodically because of my family history. Basically it is a piece of litmus paper that changes colors. I guess that suggestion is mute since she is already at the hospital. I hope you get some good news real soon!

Tks for telling me about those papers, I didn't realize, I phoned the pharmacy and they have them. But just spoke to DH and he's just going thru, so maybe they'll do that 1st at the hospital (I'm worried about them taking blood!!)

if they find anything then she's in the best place in the hospital - they will have to do alot of bloodwork/urine tests to help get her sugar regulated (if that is what it is)...

I'm insulin dependent (not a juvenile diabetic but a type 2) and Kim01 is diabetic also (we're both on pumps)....PM me if you'd like...

good luck and keep us posted...

I"m a pediatric nurse and our floor specializes in diabetes in children. The paper the previous post is talking about is called checking for ketones in the urine. If the blood sugar level is high the extra glucose spills into the urine and produces ketones in the urine.

Increased thirst, increased peeing, vomiting, lethargy, and just not feeling right are all signs of diabetes. I haven't heard of a virus causing diabetes, but it's possible that the reason she was throwing up was due to a high blood sugar and not a virus (that is assuming that she has diabetes).

Since you suspect diabetes, the best place in the hospital. You will need to be admitted if your daughter has diabetes to get her sugars under control and undergo education on how to monitor and treat diabetes.

Keep us posted when you find out. Feel free to pm me with any questions.

I'm just sitting here going crazy. Also thinking why didn't I take her to the hospital? DH said he would for some reason I let him (not sure why).. We don't have any family or anyone around to watch the other twin whose sleeping plus I let him take the van with of course the two car seats in. I have a neighbour who would watch in the morning then I can do a switch with hubby, if she's to be kept in.
    Hopefully its nothing.

Amy I don't know where to find the PM message thing??

I hope you get some news soon!

Click on Amy's display name, just above her avatar. A few options will come up, chose Invite Amy A to a Private topic then write like you would a post (it will go directly to her only). When she responds you should see a New PM tab appear at the top right of the bar where Go, New, Find etc is. You can also check by clicking on Go then hover over Personal Zone then click on Private Messaging. Hope that helps!

Amanda, I hope you hear soon from your husband and the news is all good!

But if it IS diabetes and you're looking for information on dietary management, please feel free to PM me. My aunt is a diabetes educator, my cousin (not her daughter, but on the same side of the family) has had type 1 diabetes since she was five (and her mum is very supportive and a fount of information - Jana's diabetes is quite extreme) and my four year old niece has just been assessed as being insulin resistant (the stage before full blown diabetes). So I've done heaps of reading myself and would be very happy to connect you to my aunts (both Jana's mum and my Aunty Jenny, the educator) via email. They are both terrific and have heaps of strategies for managing diet etc. Obviously the previous posters are also experts, so you might continue to find this site a great source of support!

Oh - and with regard to diabetes often occurring after a virus - yes, that is certainly the case; illness alters your body's response to glucose and can cause insulin resistance. My cousin became diabetic after a very severe bout of flu, and another acquaintance developed type 2 diabetes after contracting typhoid in a developing country.

    Good luck.

I wish all the best! Hopefully everything checked out OK.

Our niece was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at age 3.5yrs She had several back to back UTI's (due to dumping "sugar" in her urine along with increased urination. She is now almost 10yrs and is doing so well. She went on the insulin pump about 3yrs ago and that helped alot.

    Amanda,

That's great news! Actually the 5.9 was probably referring to a test called a hgbA1C, it measures what the blood sugar has been over the last 90 days. Anything below 7 is great. Normal blood sugars run in the 60's-90's.

Glad to hear everything is okay, I have been thinking about you!
