My daughter had her one hour diabetes test last Wednesday and the nurse called this morning and said she failed it and would have to have the three hour one. I've read lots of post about this, but can't find a one when I want it......lol. Can you guys tell me what is involved in the three hour test, and how it worked out for you? Thanks! Nana

I'm sorry she failed the 1hr, but I did too and passed the 3hr so I hope she does too.

The 3hr is basically the same as the 1hr.
You can't eat/drink anything after midnight the night before except water
They take your blood first thing for a fasting glucose number
Then you have to drink another drink (this one is more sugary than the first)
They take blood at the 1hr, 2hr, and 3hr marks to see what your sugar levels are.
You have to pass 3/4 tests to be considered NOT having GD

My Dr (and I seem to be the only one) they tell you right away your results and since I passed the fasting, 1hr and 2hr I didn't have to stay for the last hour.

Oh some Drs (like mine) make you stay in the office the whole 3hrs and some let you leave and come back each hour to give blood.

ETA: Some Drs (like mine again) make you load up on carbs for three days prior to testing, I've found that not all people have to do that though

Thanks for your response---I'll pass that along to her, she seems kind of nervous about it. Thanks again! Nana

When I took the test a long time ago, it was like the PP stated...take blood, drink funky drunk, take blood again. So not fun, and I was ready to eat everything in sight when I left the office...

I have to have my 3 hour test November 5th...wish me luck too!

I failed both and my test was the same as above. I just wanted to say I brought a mini DVD player and watched a movie. It might help the time go faster since I was not allowed to leave the office.

Hi PJ.....thanks for your suggestion, I'll pass it along. What did the doctor do differently after you failed both tests? She is having her three hour later today so I will post her results. Thanks again! Nana
