My MIL got me a homemade tiramisu cake this weekend when we went to visit. As soon as she opened it DH said it smelled like a whole bottle of vodka had been used.....

I looked up the recipe, and only 1/4 cup (at most, some recipes only 2 tablespoons) of brandy are used, and it's brought to a boil with the rest of the sauce anyways, thus cooking out most of the actual alcohol.... And this is spread thru the whole cake anyways...

He has a FIT over me having ANY alcohol while pregnant. Granted, I KNOW you're not supposed to get silly drunk all the time(or any of the time really) but c'mon, a dessert???

I didn't drink one drop while pregnant with the girls or BFing, and haven't so far this pregnancy either; and usually only have a glass here and there when we go out to dinner anyways, but any time I so much as MENTION alcohol, he gets this crazy look on his face and says I'd better not even be thinking about it......

    He's nutty.

Some DRs say its ok to have a glass of whine when pregnant. Most of probably choose to just avoid it while pregnant. Since the alcohol is boiled like you said I think its safe. My dh gets protective over what I eat or drink when I am pregnant sometimes I just have to tell him to back off or he will make my hormones worse :D

I ate this stroganoff type dish when I was pregnant with the twins. It has a can of beer in it! It's a crock pot recipe! I do refuse to drink it, but if it is cooked, I don't see what the big deal is.

Ohhh tiaimisu. Mmmm. My manager makes an awesome one and she brought it for our office Christmas party (right after I discovered I was expected, but hadn't announced it yet. I didn't think twice about enjoying a piece of it.

I understand that it is annoying for your DH to be cautious of what you are consuming. On the other hand, it *is* nice to know that he cares.

*goes back to thinking about tiramisu*

When you cook alcohol even for a couple of minutes no alcohol is left- it all evaporates and you are left with the flavour of it. I wouldn't think twice about it.
I guess dh is just trying to help you do the right thing but jeeeesh!!!
I had a similar discussion with my dh yesterday. I desperately wanted a second cup of coffee. Had one in the am but it was at a cafe and it was a really small cup with very light coffee and I try to limit myself to one cup a day but that 1st one really didn't count!!! I swear I could have asked to do crack and get a similar reaction!!! OK maybe he can be the pregnant mother of 17 month olds for a day and tell me if he can do it on just one cup of java!
Whether it's coffee, tiramisu or a glass of wine we're just doing the best we can here.

I've had two small glasses of wine towards the end of my third trimester. It was actually recommended by a doctor. Your baby will not get fetal alcohol syndrome, etc. DH is just being protective. Oy. My DH was kind of the same way (should you be drinking that? he would ask).

Funny you mention this. My BIL is French. Everytime I say that I feel a little guilty having coke with this baby and having none with the girls, I get this big lecture about how the French have always drank while pregnant. He said that his monther had a glass of wine everynight when she was pregnant with him.

All I can say is that I wouldn't take the chance of drinking every night, but I am sure the tiramisu is fine. SPeaking of which, now I must go find a peice. That stuff is my downfall.

Tell him when he grows a human being inside him, THEN he can tell you what to eat and drink!!! (sorry my DH just ticked me off... )

Seriously though, I had a few glasses of wine (not at once..one at a time, a few days apart) near the end of my last pg and she was fine...they even say drinking a glass of Guiness at the end helps with you milk production ( :drinks: )...hmmmm?

As for cooking it, I agree with the others I think it mostly gets evaporated while cooking!

DH and I got married when I was 15 weeks prego with the twins. I enjoyed a small glass of champagne that day with no guilt. It was the only time I partook after finding out I was prego.

Whenever this topic comes up, I cannot help but think of the generation before us (our parents) who drank and smoked and I'm sure drank more than one cup of coffee a day while being prego with us...

In my day (not that I'm THAT old, mind you! :p ) it wasn't stressed that we shouldn't drink while pregnant. I went to my share of happy hours during my second pregnancy and didn't think a whole lot of it. I usually had a margarita or two. Years later when the experts began stressing how horrible alcohol is for a developing fetus I completely freaked out. DD was fine but every milestone I wondered if the alcohol I consumed during pregnancy caused a delay, etc. I wish I had known better. (Maybe I was just stupid or too naive?)

On the other hand, my mother smoked non-stop throughout all four of her pregnancies. Yuck!!! We have old home movies of her cradling a baby in one arm while holding a cigarette in the other hand. The thought of the horrible smell and how awful that can be for a baby's lungs just makes me sick. But I lived through it, as did an entire generation I'm sure.
