I have a history of depression, I have not taken any meds since last July and have been fine, but lately I think I'm heading into depression again.
I'm worry about taking meds and being pregnant... other people say is just the hormones, but having been depressed before I'm just scared..
how do I tell the difference if it is the hormones or depression coming again? anyone taking meds while pregnant?

hi... i have bi-polar disorder(manic depression) and stopped taking my meds as soon as i found out i was pg...
the doctor says its best for the baby, i still feel down sometimes and i just use coping mechanisams to manage it...

its not ideal but babies come first, they are starting me on my meds asap after the birth..

so hang in there and try without meds for as long as poss

A mom at my sons school took her depression meds the whole entire time she was pregnant (I’m not sure which one) and Drs have followed up on her daughter her daughters whole life (she is 10 now)… but it wasn’t a casual thing… and probably why they have been following up on the little girl her whole life… I know that doesn’t help much, but its something to discuss with your Dr

I took my Welbutrin the entire time I was pregnant with my first daughter. I was going through a rough time with her dad. I stopped taking it in September 2006. That was about a year after she was born and I had a fabulous pregnancy so I guess it just depends on the type of medication that it is.

I have been on Zoloft for years and years.. and when I got pg my Doc insisted I STAY on it.. Well.. I did and while I was on it-- everything was PERFECT. Then I saw a commercial that freaked me out so I stopped taking it!! HUGE HUGE HUGE mistake!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I got soo depressed I cried all day and was just a flipping MESS! It was terrible. I ended up back at the Doc on the verge of doing something crazy and went back on it.

Zoloft is safe in pregnancy and my twins turned out PERFECT! A healthy mom is totally necessary for healthy babies. W/o me, they wouldn't be here! And not to mention what would have happened post partum!!! I shudder to think of it!!

If you think it's tough now--- don't wait--- get on something immediately so it's in your system post partum.. I struggled after they were born and I WAS on drugs!! Good luck!! Talk to your Doc asap.

I've had post partum depression after both of my other kids. With my 2nd DS I was on zoloft when I got pregnant and quickly got off. I thought if I hired a nanny and had more support after he was born, I could keep PPD at bay. Ha! It was even worse. So this time (after MUCH research and consultations with several docs) I decided to stay on it the whole pregnancy. None of the docs seemed very concerned about it. There is a study that shows a very small risk of breathing difficulties in newborns exposed to Zoloft but they were minor and rare.

I feel like this has been the best decision for me. I need to be in top shape to take care of these babies when they are born. That means I need this medication.

I took Welbutrin the entire pg and my girls seem to be fine. If I hadn't had it, I'm not sure where I'd be now. Probably in an institution somewhere. It was getting pretty bad. I could hardly talk without bursting into tears. I suggest getting some meds if you really think you need them. At least talk to your dr about it.

Thank you for asking this question! I've been feeling depressed with my new pregnancy after initially feeling elated. I've been wondering what to do as well.

I'm bumping this thread up in case there is anyone else out there with experiences to share.

another wellbutrin user here. my doc said there was no reason to worry. the depression would cause more problems that whatever small side effects may occur. talk to your doctor. but i have to say life has been so much easier this time around thanks to my wellies!!!

I took Zoloft throughout my pregnancy. Afterwards, my OB upped the dosage to combat PPD.

...so I talked to my dr. a little bit about it and he referred me to a post pardum clinic. I went to today and talked to the social worker but talking for
me doesn't really help. I don't really have "issues" to solve, but a chemical imbalance...
just don't know what do do...

If I were you, I'd ask for zoloft and get on it now. That way it has time to build up and even you out before you deliver. I thought I would wait til the babies were here and pop a pill the moment they were born but my doc pointed out that it takes a few weeks to really become effective. That would leave me only partly medicated at my most vulnerable time.
