Most dentist don't want to see children until age 3, unless there is an obvious problem. Your ped will keep an eye on the teeth at this point. My boys actually had their first dentist appointment on their 3rd birthday. On the visit before, they asked me to bring the boys, and they sat on my lap during my treatment, just to get them used to the idea. Marcus did great at his appointment, but with Jon, they never got any farther than trying to count his teeth. Now they both do great!

The ADA recommends that they be seen as soon as they have a tooth. If you ask a pediatric dentist, they'll want you to come in now. Some general dentists don't want them to come in until they're 2 or 3 unless there is a concern since they won't attempt a cleaning before then.

Personally, I scheduled with a pediatric dentist at age 2. That first appointment was literally just showing them the office and exam mirror, taking a look and a count of their teeth, and discussing brushing/flossing habits. They cried a lot and wouldn't sit in the exam chair (they were examined while sitting in my lap). At our second visit 6 months later, they were cooperative, were shown more tools, had a cleaning/polishing, and a flouride treatment. They really had a great time. They are going tomorrow and are actually excited and looking forward to it.

I take mine at age 3, that's what the ped and dentist recommend.

Our dentist told us to bring them in beginning at age 2. In the meantime, our dr. said to be vigilant about brushing their teeth.

Ours have not gone to the dentist yet but our dentist recommended to brush their teeth once a day.

I was told for the dentist they can go at 3 yrs. But through our health center there is a dental hygienist who will have the kids come in (Kaylee and Wyatt went a few weeks ago, at 16 months) and she looks into the mouth, counts the teeth, looks at the teeth placement and brushed their teeth. We get to go back again in 6 months...it is no charge for me right now and I think it kinda gets the kids used to the visit. Tey were happy that they got a new toothbrush...lol.
