I was just wondering when you should take the kiddos to the dentist for the first time. Both of mine have five teeth, working on #6. I brush them everyday but just don't know when the "routine dental care" thing should start.
    Thanks!

My FIL is a retired dentist and he says not until they are at least one.

Our dentist says at 1 year old they should see the dentist. That's what we did with DS#1.

3 years is pretty standard, unless you have any concerns beforehand.

My pediatrician says between 2 and 3 years. I've just been with my oldest who will be 3 in May.

I think some where between 2-3. A one year old (unless there are concerns are about bite or something like that) would be just a hassle and not fun for the child, parent, or dentist. At 2-3 they can understand what is going on better than a 1 year old.

My dentist said bring them in to watch DH and I get our teeth cleaned around 18-24 months, and each time after that. Then around 3-4, they should be ready to get their own exam. They said they only suggest earlier exams if there is a concern on the parent's end or if the parent doesn't seem knowledgeable on the types of things they need to do in order to avoid tooth decay (i.e. getting rid of the bottle in a timely manner, no juice in bottles, brushing their teeth, etc.)

I asked this question about a month ago. Most people said between 2-3 yrs. I think thats when I'll take my girls unless theres a problem. My girls are also working on their 6th tooth :D

I heard 2-3. If you do take them before that, they just sit and watch you get your teeth done. Our dentist said that the first time they go it will be to count their teeth, let them play with a couple of the tools, but not a "real" exam. Most kids don't do well with somebody messing in their mouths - especially strangers! From everything I've heard, this is a slow process to work up to if you want success.
