Welcome to Nicholas -- 5 lb and, Nathaniel -- 4 lb 8 oz, on 4/22. I went to the Dr. to get a lung developmental amnio and ended the day with a c-section b/c of low fluid levels.

Nicholas has VSD, but a non-surgical case. He is doing great! Breastfeeding like a champ and getting fed through a NG tub. He is still on IV TPN but that is already being lowered.

Nathaniel has Tetrology of Fallot that will require surgery to fix at a later date. He also has esophagus issues with some hard to pronounce name. His esophagus isn't completely connected to his stomach and will require surgery to fix. This is scheduled for later this week. He has already had a surgery for a temporary fix to insert a g-tube to drain his stomach. Even with that, he is holding his own. His is not on oxygen and his heart seems to be working to provide enough oxygen to his body. He is a little fussy now -- the nurses think b/c he is getting hungry.

So, good news and bad news.

I'm doing ok. Probably overdid a little yesterday as my incision area is really stinging today. I'm getting better every day and my mobility and strength are increasing. It's just those few inches when you really have to use your abdominal muscles to get up and down from chairs!

Thanks to everyone for their support so far. I guess I'll be moving to the "First Year" forum now.

Good luck to everyone and thanks!!

please dont mind me asking, but is there a history of heart defects in your family? or did these come from out of the blue?
Try not to over exert yourself! You need your strength so you can BF those growin boys! Take care of yourself and Congrats on the bundles of joy

Hi there, I was also curious...did you know that the boys might have some heart issues before they were born or was this a shock?

My DS was born with pulmonary stenosis...certainly much less serious than tetrology of fallot, but still nerve wracking! We didn't know of any issues until they heard a murmur...and then he never outgrew it...in fact, he'll be undergoing surgery on May 21st at 22 months old!

Just curious if you were prepared or not for the heart concerns.

Congrats on your bundles and good luck!!! Hang in there!!!

The heart issues were diagnosed via u/s I think about week 25.  There was an "abnormality" in the regular OB u/s with just one twin, so we went to a neo-natal cardiologist (who knew there were such things?) who diagnosed both twins. No, there is no history in either family of heart defects or twins.  We had no idea about the esophagus issues.  It was just a good thing there were so many peds docs waiting in the OR b/c of the known heart issues!  Nathaniel had major issues at delivery, but they were NOT what was expected.
To faerieprncs, good luck with you son's surgery. Keep us posted!

Welcome boys! Wow! What a birth story! I hope they are feeling better soon. Don't forget to stop by our NICU forum for support too. :welcome: to the first year!

P.S. Use their time in the hospital to allow yourself to recover. You don't need an infection too! ;)
