Is there anything I can give DS for horrible congestion?? He has the same thing I have and I know how miserable he is and I can take Mucinex! It looks like things used to be OK to give 6 months and up but now I'm reading that they have to be 4???? That's crazy! These poor babies! The sucky thing and saline drops are not helping at all. We were up most of the night. He just can't even breathe through his nose. I feel so bad for him. Any suggestions?

There really isn't anything that is approved Lisa. I did get an Rx from the ped once, but it didn't do anything. He said a lot of times it just doesn't work in infants. I would just keep doing what you are doing, maybe run a humidifier, baby Vicks on his chest? Hope he feels better soon.

Nope, not much you can do but try and keep him comfortable. Head propping can be beneficial.

 I am sorry that they are so miserable. Like Becky said there is nothing you can give them OTC anymore. It has been found to not really be effective, so why give it. Try the humidifier and maybe a dose of Tylenol before bed. I hope they feel better soon.

Maybe you could put a sudafed plug in in his room? Keep his head elevated in the crib (I put a pillow under the mattress) and run a humidifier.

We went through this at Easter and we were all miserable. It's so sad when they are that congested and not much helps. I spent a lot of time with the boys in the bathroom running a hot shower for the steam.

    What helps:
saline followed by suction to remove all the goop, then a little more saline to break up what's left
    humidifier
    steam from a hot shower
infant Tylenol to help with any pain and discomfort

Vicks and inhalant types of things have actually been proven harmful. They trick the brain into thinking that it's not making enough mucous so it actually makes more and makes the congestion worse.

I've used the plug ins since they came out with no trouble at all. I vividly remember using them when the twins were about 4mos because the older kids brought home colds from school and shared them with all of us. Joy. I read the link above and if menthol is the problem (but again, we never had any extra mucous production...the plug ins cleared their little noses right up) This rub doesn't contain menthol.

Thanks so much! I had DH go to Walgreens and he came home with Vicks Baby Rub and also Vicks Soothing Vapors plug in. We plugged in the Vapors thing before I read the link since they were napping when he got home and the link freaked me out but my sister swears by the Soothing Vapors thing too. I think I'll use them sparingly. Poor kiddo needs something. I put some of the Baby Rub on his chest before he went down for this last nap so hopefully that will help. Should I put it on his chest or anywhere else? I just used a little bit because I didn't want tons on him. Thanks again for all the tips!!

What all the PP's said is all that you can do for this age.
A couple of other things we tried were:
DH & I would put the baby rub on the bottoms of their feet and then put socks on them and that helped too.
Also, even try motrin it seems to help our kids rest better if they are in discomfort.

Good Luck :) I know it's tough! We are still going through this congestion stuff with our DS and it has lasted almost a month now.

I don't have anything to add, but just wanted to say, I hope you both feel better soon!

Thanks so much! I'm finally feeling better but Walker has a fever now (almost 101 about 3am) so we're off to the Pedi this morning. I called to double check they wanted us to come in but with his history of getting a lymph node infection and being in the hospital for a week the last time he had a stuffy nose we all decided not to take any chances and have him in there ASAP. Hopefully all is well and we can get some meds to help him get better quick.

I have heard from a bunch of moms to use Vicks Vaporub on the bottom of their feet (not the chest yet at this age) as it absorbs well. It works well for my LO's. I also did the humidifier with the vicks in the cup thingy so it goes into the air.

I hope your LO feels better!

Wish I would have read this before we went. I'll have to remember that name. Well we went and it turns out he has a pretty bad ear infection with the congestion. She suggested the Baby Vicks on his feet and I told her we did the Vicks Soothers plug in thing the night before and she said she's heard good things about that too so we're just doing that. Hoping the amoxicillan kicks in soon and he feels better quick. I had him sleep in the bouncy chair in his crib last night and that seemed to help him sleep better since he breathes better sitting up. Only thing is he's getting close to 19 pounds and really weighs the thing down!! He's still inclined but just barely ;) Getting to be such a big boy. :)

Poor guy, i hope the amox kicks in soon!!

Watch for allergic reaction even after he finishes it up, my older dd reacted about 3 days after her last dose.
