We noticed in the last few weeks that Samantha has a grey front tooth. Thinking back, I do remember a busted lip while she was playing at grandma's house, but that's about all I remember (the girls are so injury prone that I usually shrug it off quickly).

Well, at our croup follow-up today, Paul remembered to mention it to the ped. Sure enough, her tooth is dead. It will grey and fall out eventually. I'm kind of disappointed. That's several years of grey-toothed pictures. And then I feel guilty- that fall must have hurt!

I should be grateful it's a baby tooth, right? Right. Okay. Perspective.

Do y'all have any similar experiences? Injuries at a young age that scarred or cost teeth?

One of my twins has a dead tooth. He fell on a friends hard wood floor at a NYE party, busted his lip and killed the tooth. That was 2 years ago? Well 2 1/5. It did go almost completely black for awhile, then started to lighten back up. Now you can barely notice that it's a little discolored. Nobody would know unless I told them. I'll see if I have a picture of it, but I think I did avoid taking pictures for awhile!

They had a regular cleaning appt a few weeks after it happened and the dentist looked it over. Said 'yup, it's dead, but it's a baby tooth so it'll fall out on it's own eventually' But it's still hanging in there.

Okay, I did some photo research and apparently the incident happened 2010/2011 NYE, so it's only been a year and a half. My memory is not so good. His dead tooth is his front left tooth.

Anyway, here's his lip all nasty looking: http://www.flickr.com/photos/katheros/7598062896/in/photostream

Here he is two months later, it's a cell phone pic so not the greatest, but you can see where it looks like he's missing a tooth and it's just that it was so dark: http://www.flickr.com/photos/katheros/7598069148/in/photostream/

And one from last summer, you can see it's still gray: http://www.flickr.com/photos/katheros/7598052222/in/photostream/

Here he is with Josh from a couple weeks ago: http://www.flickr.com/photos/katheros/7521377220/in/photostream/
    And at the zoo: http://www.flickr.com/photos/katheros/7475980740/in/photostream/

See, that isn't even noticeable! Good. :) If Josh still looks that cute in pictures, I've got hope.

His injury looked way worse than Sam's. Poor kid! HOW do they mange to do these things to themselves?

I think it was only really bad for maybe a month or two. I don't remember anyone noticing it and saying something about it, though.

Honestly, I don't even know what happened. I was in another room, the twins were playing with another kid in the other room, I heard him cry and my husband went and got him. He was bleeding all over the place! At first I thought he put a tooth all the way through his lip and was afraid he would need stitches.

DS#1 is a MAJOR thumb sucker which has resulted in a big overbite. A normal bite is rated at 1. DS#2's bite is .75, DS#1 a 20! :woah:

Back in November DS#1 crashed into the back of DS#2's head. There was blood along his gum line but it stopped within a few minutes. FF to about a month later, we were in Sam's Club and I just happened to look at DS#1's mouth and noticed that his two front teeth were grey.

I made an appointment with their dentist that week and she confirmed that they were dead. Unless they became infected, there was no reason to remove them.

Earlier this year I noticed the one tooth is pretty much back to normal, but the other is still grey.

I too hate the fact that he'll have this dark tooth for the next couple of years. It does not help that he has this huge overbite because it draws attention to it.

On a positive note I just tried to find a photo that would show just how dark it is and I can't. I'm guessing it will show up on school pictures and other photos that are super close.

So I guess until it falls out, I'll just make sure not to zoom in too much.

Each of my twins have a gray tooth too. But both lightened after the initial issue. As long as there is no bump indicating an abscess it should be fine. You really can't even notice too much. And when we get pics, I'll just have them lighten it a bit....

My brother at 18 momths had an undiagnosed ear infection. He was standing on a table bench and fell, knocking out a tooth. He had the cutest toothless grin until his big tooth came in. That said, I will be watching Evan's mouth.. he's had more than one split lip including one just less than a week ago.

Wow, you guys scare me with all these dead teeth stories - I didn't even know it was possible, so now I will know what's going on when it happens, knowing my kids, I am sure it's "when" it happens, not "if" it happens :). Also, Kate, your boys are very cute!

My oldest broke one of her front teeth at about 18/19 months. She was standing in the tub and didn't want to get out of her bath. She reached for the side of the tub but there was a little water and her hand slipped. Since she was leaning forward the momentum took her full force into the side. She came up with a bloody mouth and half her tooth missing. By some miracle, it has shown no signs of dying yet but it is definitely broken. Most people wouldn't notice unless they really paid attention to her mouth.

I know what you mean about the guilt - I still wince every time I notice the break or think about the incident. But I try to tell myself that at least it happened in a way that she won't remember the pain and the tooth will eventually fall out. That said, I now have a bath mat on the side of the tub to accompany the one that's been on the bottom all along.

Jazz chipped a tooth in a fall but it didn't kill it. She just had an uneven tooth surface for a while. The girls did end up having silver caps on several of their teeth due to bad genetics and bad original dentist. You really don't notice them (molar teeth) much in pics
