DD's frustration

Bettye Katheryne gets so frustrated lately trying to hold more things than her hands will allow. :gah: She feels that if there are 3 or 4 of one item, she has to hold them all at the same time. For instance, the girls got baby dolls for Christmas and she has to hold them both at the same time. This works out for her. However, when she tries to hold 3 weeble wobble people at once, it just doesn't work out for her. She throws herself backwards and cries (sometimes hitting her head on the floor with a "thud!"). :headbang:

Is there anything I could/should do or do I just let her work it out on her own? And how about the tantrums...do I just ignore them?

    TIA ladies!

Maybe you could offer her a bag? I know mine love to put stuff in bags so it might work, you could get her a special bag of her own that is easy to open and put things in, if you don't already have a child size bag. Or see if you can hold some for her or get her to put some on a table or something. When you see her trying to pick up more things than she can manage I'd try saying something like "Uh oh! That's too many to hold! Shall we put some in your bag/put them on the table/mommy hold one for you?" If she refuses all attempts to help her, and is not happy unless she can hold all of the things in her hands, then I think she'll just have to continue being frustrated until she can accept her limitations.

As for the resulting tantrums I'd try distracting her with something else fun, then ignore if distracting didn't work.

A bag is a good idea, or a stroller?? One of the doll sized strollers... Or you could like mine did - they used to pack everything up in the bottom of the duoglider and push it around the house! LOL We'd leave it set up by the front door...

I think we got back-packs (yes, regular, kid sized back packs) for them around 14 months that they liked stuffing all their 'lovies' in for the day and hauling off to daycare with them.

A little play grocery cart would be good to to push around the house. I seen some for like $10 at TRU before christmas.

I second the bag or play grocery cart. That helped my DD, because she was another one who liked to hold a lot of things too. Now that she is older, she will ask us to hold her stuff for her.

I love the grocery cart suggestion! I may have to steal that idea for my boys. ;)
