So the past few weeks have been stressful to say the least. My DD has turned into a very clingy baby and when she doesn't get held when she wants, or when she doesn't get her way, she starts screaming and throwing herself on the floor. I'm not sure what happened to my sweet little girl! I think sometimes it is a jealousy issue too because if I pick up her brother, she gets upset sometimes. Daycare has noticed the same thing. If she walks by without picking her up or if she picks up another kid, she goes into meltdown mode. Since she started doing the tantrum thing, we have not given in to her crying...we try to ignore it hoping she will see that throwing fits won't get her what she wants. But she just sits there screaming, and screaming and throwing herself on the floor over and over. I'm not sure if I should continue with this strategy or not. Has anyone else have this happen??? Any suggestions??? Please help! :gah:

Sometimes they can be starting to come down with something -- sick, teething. I find when mine would get clingy I get really clingy back to them. I just mall them and they get annoyed and push to get away. My one twin was more clingy and it is similar to a kangaroo and a baby Joey. The baby will jump away and then need to comeback to the comfort of the mother. Each time they return to the mother they gain confidence to leave again. Your child might just been needed a bit more cuddles to deal with life right now. Giving more hugs and cuddles will not spoil them, I've found the opposite to be true.

This was about the age that tantrums started to really take off in our house. I noticed that teething and frustration led to my kids having some major meltdowns. Once the kids could start to communicate better, it seemed like the tantrums went down. I used to make sure that they were in a safe place and let them have their tantrum.
I also agree with Heather, in terms of the jealousy, I would also give her extra kisses and cuddles and explain that Mommy (or which ever caretaker) also has to pay attention to her brother.

It could be her one year molars. My one son will get super clingy when he's not feeling well.

Try giving her motrin and see if that helps.

I do the same thing as Heather. Jack is my super-clingy boy; we call him "the Jack-pendage". He goes through phases of needing more and less attention, but when he's "on" all he wants to do is be held 24x7. We try to hold him as much as we can to give him confidence and reassurance. It is tough to get anything done, but we've learned to do almost all of our cooking one-handed. :p

Seriously, I've found that the more I hold and snuggle on him, the quicker these episodes go away. Especially when he gets up from his nap. Sometimes if I just hold him for 10 minutes after he wakes up, it will forestall a 30 minute meltdown. Teething definitely makes the clinginess *much* worse, so I second the recommendation to check her teeth and apply Motrin as necessary. :good:

Good luck, and this phase *will* pass!

I can relate to the horrible tantrums. My son has recently started having monster tantrums, banging his head against the wall and everything. And it seems like the slightest thing can set him off too. This is definitely not a fun phase.
