Any advice on getting Sophie to eat her solids? We're nearly 7.5 months and although her brother eats 4oz of cereal and fruits in the am and 3-4 oz of veg in the afternoon, Sophie is nto cooperating at all. She eats maybe 1.5-2 oz a sitting, if that. We think she may be constipated so we're working on that but does anyone have a kiddo who did not want to eat solids this late in the game?

    Thanks

 My kids are almost 1 year and my dd just recently started eating 4.5 ounces (1 jar) of fruit 2x a day. She would not let any food pass her gums and would gag and vomit if it did get in there! I just kept trying and kept trying and finally what i found worked was when i shoved the spoon in between her lips and she started gagging on it we would jump up and down and yell "yay" and clap and scream and it distracted her enough where she would swallow.

We did this for about 3 weeks 2x a day (totally exhausting haha) and finally she is eating purees although only fruits. Also my older dd plays peek a boo with her or makes funny faces to distract her. What about feeding in front of the tv with a favorite show on or baby einstein or let her play with a favorite toy while you feed her? I am sure that is not ideal, but as I have learned from my dd you have to do what works and just go with it. Unfortunately dd still gags and vomits on anything other than purees and the distraction technique is not working for that one. :(

Good luck, hopefully it is just a stage with her, or her belly is smaller. Oh also, maybe she is too full from nursing/bottle? Try at a different time if you haven't been.

Late in the game?? She is still very young. I don't think any of my kids were eating solid food that young! Breastmilk (or formula) is the primary source of nutrition for the first year. Up until about 15-20 months I feel like food is just an experiment- new tastes, textures, smells, etc but not for calories or nutrition. I would totally follow her cues- if she's not into it don't worry. Some day she'll be eating you out of house and home!! Especially with the constipation, I'd do what feels right for her.

As for your son. If he keeps that up you really will be complainig when he is 17 about food bills. Enjoy the new phases as they come.

DD didn't really get the concept of eating solids until just a few weeks ago, even though DS has done really well with them for months. Then, all of a sudden it just clicked for her and now she eats really well. So I guess just be patient and it will come for her too.

Annabella was horrible to feed solids too(I sound like a broken record!). She just didn't care for them at all. I know some kids just aren't interested in the pureed foods. How is she with her formula/breastmilk? I didn't stress about Annabella and her solids. I just kept trying. I was looking forward to nine months when I put her on table foods!

Have you done like homemade foods, just mashed up? Mashed potatoes? Sweet potatoes?

I too would advise you not to worry at this point. As another poster has stated, solids are just for practice at this point and formula/breastmilk will continue to be their main source of nutrition until they're at least one year old. So try not to stress about how many ounces your DD is getting and just focus on practicing and experimenting with new foods for the moment. My girls didn't really get into solids until they were about 9 months old.

As for the constipation issue, just be sure to stay away from bananas, applesauce, rice cereal and other constipating foods. Viv has issues with constipation so she eats prunes or pears every morning with her cereal.

Good luck and try and have fun with it!

Solids are just for practice in the FY, as PPs have said. I wouldn't worry at all at this point.

Ditto what the PPs have said... it's just practice now and I think it would be impossible to "make" her eat. I'd just go with it. I have heard some kids are just never into purees, and as soon as they can start finger foods they will eat like crazy. Who knows... babies can be a mystery

Ok, so now i'm thinking is Noah eating too many solids. He's hungry a lot. He eats his solids very easily and would eat more if he could. His formula intake is still quite high- anywhere from 26-31 oz/day. We're trying to stretch him out t0 4.5 hours between feeds and it is working quite well.

So funny how two babies from the same parents can be SOOOOOO different.

    Thanks for your advice!

Here are the max amounts our doctor told us our LO's should be eating in a day, and they are just a little older than Noah.

    4 oz. fruit
    4 oz. veggies
2 oz. proteins (meat, cottage cheese, no more than 3 egg yolks a week)
Also, it is okay to do some finger foods (puffs that melt, etc.)
    1-2 servings of cereal

Also, check out this website - it is very helpful:
