So here is the situation. DH gets bath ready and I usually sit there with the girls while they bathe. Lately DD keeps putting her face in the water. I kept telling her no and made her take her face out. It just made me nervous. Then I wondered if I was overreacting. She was putting it down so her face was just touching the water. Then I am paranoid I will ruin her for swimming later but preventing her from playing and putting her face in the water now. So last night I let her do it while I was right there but then on the third time she swallowed water and starting gagging. She wanted to put her face back while she was still coughing. That was the end of that. It makes me also nervous because I feel like my attention is wrongly diverted from other dd. So tonight at bath time she did the same thing. I kept repeatedly telling her no, tried redirecting her and finally just had to take her out. Wondering if I am doing right or wrong? WWYD?

I have one who has done this a few times. I let her do it. I think she will eventually realize the cause/effect of choking when she puts her face in the water.

Both of my girls do this all the time, and I just let them go at it. Now they just love to blow bubbles in the bath water. I think I am more grossed out that they are drinking the bath water than I am worried something bad might happen.

I've got a bath water drinker as well. She does it then says "yummy". Gross... I let her do it because I am there to supervise.

My DD has started doing this at every bath and when we play with bowls of water outside (in lieu of a water table for now we use my biggest mixing bowls that are huge). At first I was concerned, but then I started showing her to blow out (and I make a noise with the blowing) and she has started to imitate. She hasn't gotten her timing down for blowing and putting her face in the water, but she is really working on it.

I am of the mind to let her try to figure it out and learn (even though it does scare me sometimes and I'm a huge worry wart). They are never around water unsupervised, so I don't see the harm. I'm thinking it will make her less fearful when we start getting in pools this summer (which we are going to start next weekend when we visit my brother so I will soon see how that goes).

She does suck in a bit of water sometimes and drinks some, but she just sneezes or coughs it out.

Both of mine do this as well. They think it's fun. I just make sure they bring their head back up quickly.

My boys love to do this, and I do let them. Sometimes, they inhale some water, but it's always a tiny amount, they cough/gag, then end up smiling and diving right back in. I am always present in case anything happens, but I am not too worried. My thought is that they can't really learn how to breathe BEFORE they go under rather than DURING unless they practice (and we all have to make some mistakes before we learn, no matter what it is we are learning).

This is what my twins do... yak! However, I agree.... I am there and they need to learn to swim at some point....

I really dont stop them from doing much of anything in the tub except for drinking the water (only because I watch them pee in it). But even then I cant always stop that :bad: I want them to be really comfortable around the water and not reacting to every little thing.

Thanks for the responses. It is nice to know how everyone else handles it. I think I am overreacting based on the responses, time for me to relax a little and let her have fun as long as I am right there.
