My girls were almost 6 mos when I put them in daycare. They caught a cold almost immediately. I saw it coming as there was another baby there - about 9 mos old - whose nose was runny etc. The hazards of daycare - especially a large one, with lots of other kids. I'm lucky now as my sister is watching them. They'll still get colds etc. as she has 2 children that go to school that will most likely bring everything home with them. But with her kids being a little older - 5 & 8 - it's not like they have runny noses - rubbing it on the babes etc. - but they do love the girls and "help" my sister out etc. and I'm sure hands don't get washed etc. I'm not familiar with what kinds of precautions you should take with preemies. talk to your ped. Did you see on the news about baby cold medicines? basically they are ineffectual - maybe do more harm than good etc. She was saying even a humidifier doesn't really help that much at all. walking in the steamed up bathroom for 10 minutes works 100 times better she said. this was on national news the other morning - Today show - good morning America - one of those. not to scare you or anything - but my girls have had 2 colds so far and I gave them infant Tylenol cold medicine. and no - it didn't seem to do much. She said regular infant tylenol / motrin works just fine for discomfort of colds as well as fevers etc. just a little food for thought. I'm a big fan of vicks - a little on their chest or their pj's. sorry so long - hope some of this helps :D

I actually just got off the phone with their ped. and she said she does not recommend it until about 3 months or so but she will determine that at their 2 month check-up.

We put ours in at 4 months. They were not premies (born at 37 weeks).

My girls were born at 32 weeks - I put them in daycare when they were 8 monhts old and they got colds with-in the first month or so.

I never heard of premee's not being albe to attend daycare unless they were micro-premies. They are going to get sick regardless of what you do - don't beat yourself up about it. You can not live in a bubble.

My girls are 18 months now and are doing great - even with an occasional cold.

My girls started at the sitters at 5 months. My cousin-in-law watches just them but she has a 5 and 8 year old who bring home all kinds of germs from school. Thanksfully they haven't been sick yet but I figure they are goign to get sick soemtime! I've never heard of premies not being able to go to daycare unless there is a health problem already.

    Good Luck!

i went back to work when they were 3 months old. i intiially was looking at facilities for daycare, but couldn't find any parttime for a reasonable price (almost everywhere, "parttime" was a minimum 4 days- that is FULLTIME!!!!)
anyway, i then started looking for in home care, and found a lady that is doing a great job. and she was just finishing up 2 kids that were moving, and since she knew she had infant twins coming in, she decided to just start with them and go from there. they are the only 2 there, which is great. we have had only 1 illness so far, an di have NO Idea where he got it (or how DD did NOT get it!).
if you have to go back to work, i don't think you really have much choice, unless yoru husband has any FMLA through work and can take some time off until they are a little older and stronger. i would just look for a place you are comfortable with, and be ready for germs. unfortunately we are also coming into cold/flu season, and i know that doesn't help. just try to be vigilant with hand washing when you can.
    good luck.

Unfortunately being born prematurely is a health risk in and of itself. Consider that most children in childcare get RSV at some point. Couple this with the signficant consequences of RSV in preemies and for sure, childcare is not recommended for children born prematurely.

I've heard/read to keep preemies out of daycare for at least the first two years, if at all possible. This is when children are at risk for having significant complications from RSV.

wow, I never have heard this. 2 years?? I guess my girls were born at 36 weeks and have never had any problems so I dont' really consider them "premies". Maybe if they had been born really early I would feel differently. My doctor had no problems with me taking my girls to a sitter.

My twins started daycare at 2 months. They caught some colds, but never RSV or anything more than a cold. They were born at 39 weeks, in case that helps.

Since yours were born at 39 weeks (way to go, by the way!) RSV doesn't affect them the same way. RSV presents as a cold in healthy, full-term children so yours may well have had it!

Mine have to start the shots in the next couple weeks. Not looking forward to it, but I guess it's better safe than sorry!

Mine started at 9 weeks. They are at an inhome daycare, but there are about 14 kids that attend there. I think they were only about 6 pounds when they started. I don't know the technical preemie standard, but they were 36 weeks - a little over 4 pounds.

My grandsons stay with me during the day and have since they were six weeks old. Their pediatrician didn't recommend day care until a year old if other alternatives were possible - I was that alternative. Staying home with me has not kept them from getting sick since both their parents are teachers in elementary school and bring every thing home to them. You're going to be exposed to illness anytime you leave the house whether you see the symptons or not - there is always going to be someone out there coughing and sneezing and passing on the germs - even your co-workers. Don't guilt yourself if you have to put them in daycare and they get sick. Just do the best you can. Babies are very resilient little creatures.

I diddo this statement. Mommies tend to have enough guilt as it is!
