Today was a rare occasion that both my DH and I were able to get the boys from Daycare. I was talking to the director (outside of the baby room) about obtaining a breakfast and lunch schedule since they are starting to eat more like the big kids. While I was doing this, DH was talking to one of the teachers and she started telling him that they gave them peanut butter...

    WHAT!!!! :grr:

The main reason I am so upset about this is that one of our LO's has a diaper area that is so red and raw that it almost looks burnt.

Can giving peanut butter too early cause this?
Am I silly that I am so upset that I feel like finding a new daycare?

While you are reading my post- what can I do for this awful diaper area thing? We gave baths tonight and I used some butt paste, but he was kicking his legs around so much that it was almost all off before I got the diaper on.

Thanks for reading and any advice is welcome1!

I would be mad too about the pb! What if they had an allergic reaction? :grr: I would talk to the director and see what they have to say about it. For me personally I wouldn't find it a reason to switch daycares.. however YOU have to feel comfortable and 100% trust them with your babies, so if that changes your feelings, then maybe you should look for another place.
As for the diaper rash, I'm not sure if that has anything to do with the pb... I would put the butt paste on or some triple paste and also put some vasoline over it so it stays on.
 I hope tomorrow is better!

Thank you for the reply! I am so upset and my DH just doen't understand why.

Isn't it commen sense that you don't give PB until after one year of age?

It's pretty much known not to give your kids peanut butter before one year of age. They could have serious allergic reactions to it. I don't know if the diaper rash is the cause of the peanut butter, but they could be letting your baby sit in their diapers for an extended period of time before changing him. I use aquaphor for diaper rash and within a day it is gone. Triple butt paste never worked for us, but the aquaphor always does.

i would be really mad about the pb.. not only is it a possible allergen, it is a choking hazard for infants.. too sticky.

i don't think that the diaper rash is related though, it sounds like they aren't changing him frequently enough. i've had good luck with original desitin and a&d ointment. both are pretty sticky and stay on better than butt paste which is pretty thin.. i would probably also avoid using wipes on it and just clean him up with a cool wet washcloth.

I would be pretty angry about the peanut butter. And I might just be mad enough to start looking for a new daycare. That is pretty irresponsible IMO. And if they are having an allergic reaction to a food, that can cause diaper rash whether its peanut butter or something else they are introducing that you dont know about.

I have had pretty good luck with A and D ointment first and then covering that with alot of vaseline to create waterproof barrier. GL with the rash.

My SIL had my dd over (just her) for a birthday party for her dd. She served peanut butter & Jam sandwiches. DD had not been introduced to PB yet so she made something else for her.

I think that is totally irresponsible for them to give them peanut butter without asking your permission.. at any age. Giving 10 month olds peanut butter is crazy. Like the PP stated.. it is a choking hazard! What if they had a severe allergic reation? I'd be really thinking twice about returning.

I would have been irate about the peanut butter. I would definitely talk to the director about it. If you don't feel comfortable with the day care center, you should look elsewhere.

If the diaper rash doesn't clear with the butt paste, it could be yeast. Your ped can give you a prescription cream if that is what he thinks it is. I recently had a patient who actually had a diaper rash that turned to impetigo and spread everywhere even his precious face. Not saying that to scare you, I had just never seen such a thing and just reinforced there can be many causes for diaper rash and if you aren't making any headway with the traditional means, don't hesitate to see your ped.

The peanut butter thing would have made me furious!! Being a daycare, they should definitely know better & I would probably question the level of care they are giving. Have you had any other issues with them?

As for the diaper rash, pile on the ointment of some kind. If it doesn't improve, it could be yeast. Typically a yeast infection will have little red spots around the edges of the red area. If it turns out to be yeast, you will need an antifungal cream, but that will usually clear it up quickly.

About the PB I would be furious. Talk with director about it.

About diaper rash:my dd has sensitive skin and we just heal one diaper rash.
every time at bath time I put in the water grind oatmeal grain. ( grind it with coffee grinder and just put 1-2 full hand in the water.) and let your LO sit in that water it will calm the skin and put like thin protection layer. also baby bee diaper rash cream and tripple paste help us. Aquafor didn't work for us with bad diaper rash. just put the thick layer og cream to shield the effected area. It took us 3 weeks to heal it. so be patient...

I would be livid! I would also be looking at other day care options. My imagination tends to run wild and I would be thinking of all the other things they could have given my kids without me knowing. If the director reprimands the teacher and makes an effort to reinforce the dangers of peanut butter with infants with all the staff, I would reconsider switching. Most schools don't even allow PB to be eaten in the cafeteria b/c so many children have allergies to it.

We never had a really bad diaper rash, but Aveeno cream also worked for the mild ones.

I would have been irate!! Do you take the food to the daycare? I know ours only feeds the boys what I take them so they can't have any extra snacks or anything like that. As for the diaper rash...we use Pinkxavv...you have to ask for it behind the Rx counter but it works wonders!!! Cleared up a raw red butt here in under a day!!!

No, you are not wrong to be upset about the PB. I would review the forms you filled out though. I know a couple people who just didn't realize that the forms said PB would be given unless parent specified otherwise. But, in general, I do not think a daycare should give PB without parental consent. I know ours doesn't do PB at all for any age. That said, if you are otherwise happy with the daycare, I would not switch because of this. You are never going to be 100% happy.

I doubt that PB would cause a localized diaper area reaction, so it seems like your little ones were fine with it. At least you can cross that off the allergy list. For the diaper rash, I am a big fan of Aquaphor - slather it on with every change (and give a tube to the daycare) and it should clear up.

I would have been incredibly mad too. I would hope that all day cares know not to attempt giving children peanut butter even if they are over 1 year old without talking to the parents first - I would feel just like you. When DS got his first diaper rash it cleared up pretty quickly and wasn't that bad, just ultra red and sensitive. I used regular Desitin (a whole lot) at night and during the day would use lanolin - the stuff new moms use for cracked nipples. Worked like a charm! Hope it heals soon!

Thank you everyone for your replies. I called this morning and talked with the director. She understood my concern and was going to address it and get back to me. I am a little less upset now that I have had a chance to sleep on it, but I don't think it is worth switching daycares. This is really the first issue I have had with them, so I am not going to do anything drastic. I toured all the other daycares in town and they are in the best one.

As far as the diaper rash goes, we are going to try Aquafore and A&D Ointment to see if that helps. I talked to the nurse at the pedi's office this morning and she said to try that first before bringing him in.

Thanks again everyone- I appreciate it!

I used to work in an ER and one doctor prescribed the use of Maalox and vaseline for severe diaper rash. Put the Maalox on and let it dry then put vaseline on it as a skin barrier.

Also try just letting them sit without a diaper on, letting their bottom air dry.

As has been said by others before me… I would be really upset about the peanut butter, and I would seriously question the child care skill and/or knowledge of any daycare that gave peanut butter to a child under one year old.

As for the rash… in addition to any pastes, creams, or ointments… some good soaking time can help. Ten minutes or more of sitting in the bathtub (and if your twins are anything like mine they will think it’s a great treat since they enjoy splashing in the water so much) followed by some ‘naked baby time’ to let them air dry thoroughly.

IMO giving pb to any child under the age of one is just as irresponsible as leaving a baby in a bath unattended and ANY adult should know better then to do that. IMO that is outrageous. That is direct endangerment. I would have a long conversation with the director about this until some type of agreement was made that made you feel a mistake like this was never made like this again. If she can not reassure you that your babies are safe in their care, then it's time to find another daycare. That was absurd.

I'd be really upset if they gave my kids pb. Our 1st pedi. didn't even want kids having it until age 3 I believe. We've tested it ourselves, but that is something that is up to a parent to do and especially not for kids that young. For the diaper rash, our current pedi recommended Calmoseptine. It's an over the counter barrier cream, but sometimes they keep it behind the counter and it actually has a bit of numbing to it to help with the pain of the rash. It's super thick and stays on. I've also done the Maalox and aquafor or vasoline before and it worked pretty well. The Maalox takes away the sting and helps dry it out. I hope it gets better soon for you.

I personally would be furious and would switch daycares. I only say this because I have worked with several children that have extreme allegeries to peanut butter where they litterally had seconds to get the eppy (notsure on spelling) pen. I would definately consider that a dangerous situation and would question my children's safety there. They should have asked you in your enrollement interview if you have introduced common allergy food such as peanut butter, egg, strawberries and made a note in your file. In our state we can only give the food the parents provide for the first 18 months after that they can follow the school schedule. Allergies should also be clearly posted in the classroom for everyone to view. They should definately not be introducing any food that you haven't given them JMO
