The twins are 19 months old and we've talking about transitioning them to toddler beds for a little while now.
The new baby is coming in 2 months so we finally made the plunge and did it today. Its still thier "crib" and all their bedding, it just has a toddler rail in place of one of the sides.
They think the beds are great fun and were very enthusiastic to help me convert them. Then I put them down for a nap....

First thing they did was unplug the monitor, so I now need to find a new location for that. They were very quiet not to talk but I could still hear them playing.
At one point I went in to put them both back in their beds only to find DS playing happily, while DD was sitting in her rocking chair about half asleep with every blanket, puppy and baby she owns  I told them it was time for a rest and left again.
They've been in there a full hour now and no one has yet to nap. Im giving them 30 more minutes.

How many days/nights did it take to finally get some sleeping toddlers? I know its going to be a little work and Im hoping it will be no longer than a 1 week transition...is that a realistic expectation?

Im looking for any stories of what worked, what didnt work, how long it took etc.

    TIA!

    Update!!!

After I let everyone get up, they got their diapers changed and had a drink. 20 minutes passed and poor DS started crying while saying "nigh-nigh" so the 3 of us went back to their room.
I shut the blinds, turned on their music put everyone in bed and I sat in the rocking chair. I must have told DD for 10 minutes to get in her bed and stay but once she did I sat down next to DS and rubbed his little back. He was out within 10 minutes.

I went over to DDs bed to try and rub her back to sleep but she wasn't having it. So she got up and hand quiet time and lunch with mommy. 1 hour later when DS woke, I told her she was going nigh-nigh. She went to her room and laid down and he stayed up and had his lunch and quiet time. So not much of a break for me but it was nice to have individual time with each child and I guess I consider it a success since they both still got a nap and in toddler beds to boot! :)

Maybe Id see more of a response in the 2-4 forum??

That's great! I'd say it was a success if they slept in their! Whatever way it happens! And-it's always nice to have one on one time with the twins. I usually only get it from Anthony because Nicholas generally sleeps longer.

As for the toddler beds, I am not doing that for quite some time! I think I may try no pacifiers, potty training, and toddler beds at the same time! ;) All of these things I am NOT looking forward too! Although-I did see Nicholas try to put his leg up over the crib the other day.....

My two are not yet in toddler beds but both them have put their legs over the crib rails... I am hoping to wait until they turn two before we make the transition. I know there are some Moms who did make the transition to toddler beds in the SY but it sounds like your two did pretty decent for their first day. Good luck and let us know how tonight goes for you.

It's a whole new world to them so like with anything else, you have to set the guidelines and teach them/let them know what you expect. We firmly laid down the rules and in about a week they were back to napping. There were still plenty of times that they spent a good 1/2 hour before naps or nighttime playing around. I would intervene if it went longer than a 1/2 hour or if they were bothering each other to the point of someone getting upset.

   Bedtime went fantastic!
We did our normal routine before closing their door. About 15 minutes later my husband went and "laid down the law" and everyone got back in their beds (sheesh he sounded scary and I thought he may have been over the top for that being the first time going in and having everyone get back to bed) but we didn't hear another peep. 20 minutes went by and DH decided he had to take a look in their room.
Everyone was in their bed ASLEEP!

Now to see how they sleep through the night and handle their morning wake-up.
Then we can start with day 2.

Im hoping it continues to go well.....because if it does I guess it will make me feel confident that we made the right choice to switch now despite what our pedi recommended ;)

I think the key really is to stay behind the door (or inside if they will let you) to make sure that they stay in bed.
