Tonight DD cut her hair. She did a fairly ok job, just bangs and a small spot on the top of her head. She has only had 2 haircuts in her life but just to trim the ends. I am pretty sure MIL cut her hair when she was about a 1.5 yr old and have never gotten over it. She has/had the prettiest long hair. Well tonight she decided to play beautician because not only did she cut her hair but my brother and his girlfriend who has 3 yr old twin boys were all here visiting and she cut everyone's hair. These boys have the classic bowl cut and DD cut it at the crown. She left two bald spots on one of the boys. Their mom was horrified, almost to the point of tears. After reviewing their hair and starting to talk to DD we realized that she cut hers too.
I remember I cut my Barbie's hair when I was little and also a Shirley Temple doll that was my aunts. I cut off all those beautiful curls. But I don't remember stories or anything about me cutting my own hair.
Since I have 2 more growing up I am wondering is this something that I will have to look forward to..... Is this something typical of this age?

Looks like you had the same kind of day I did...so sorry  I think experimenting with scissors is totally normal. I don't know any child that hasn't done it to themselves, a dog, a doll, or someone else. It's like a rite of passage for being a kid. Allison has done it to hers, haven't noticed Sarah's yet, but then again she's all into sticking things up her nose!!

I cut my hair in the 3rd grade, my school picture is SCARY... also i believe there is a story about my grandmother cutting her younger sister's hair when they were like 3 and 4....it's very common.

    It will grow back!!!!

I would have been devastated! I would make sure she has NO access to scissors! My friend's DD did this to herself and butchered her hair. So she had to cut it in some strange way to hide her 'handy work' and it made her look way too mature  When Ali was going over there - I prepped her telling her not to let that little girl NEAR her hair with scissors. (Sorry, this isn't helping)

YES, it will grow back on all of them!!! That's the good news!! It's not the end of the world - but for some reason, it's highly emotional. Keep her in playdoh scissors only!

Hopefully it's just a girl thing and you won't have to deal w/ that with your boys! My son has scissors and he has been warned to only cut paper with them. The kid's scissors he has says that they won't cut hair, but we haven't tested that to see. I don't think it has occurred to my son to cut his own hair with scissors, although he is a boy and lots of other mischievous things occur to him pretty regularly! I cut my own hair when I was 3 or 4...i literally had no bangs left! My mom was of course horrified, but it grew back and now she has a funny story to tell on me! I also cut the shower curtain at my grandma's house once. I saw my mom trimming it to fit for her (they had low ceilings in their bathroom and the shower curtain puddled in the tub). I thought my mom's trim job needed a little more work and I cut it so short that it didn't even touch the tub anymore. My mom wasn't happy about this either!

    Good luck :)

 I'm sorry! I have two things to say. First, I'm sorry it happened to someone else's kids as well. That's probably the worst thing about it. But...looking back, and at other people's kids who've done the same thing, it's just another one of "those" things that happens. I think it's a pretty common adventure for kids. I have a friend who's dd cut off her beautiful, long, curly pony tail...but what can you do :pardon: No, it's not ok, but it's also not the end of the world.

That's my second thing. Yes, it looks bad, but it's not the end of the world. It grows back. Nobody was hurt. There are many worse things for people to get upset about. Everybody knows when a child has given themselves a haircut, and it just causes "memories" for anybody with children. I am sorry you had to experience this, though.

    Did you take pictures?
    :D

I'd actually be mortified if Alice did it to another person's child. So I understand. . .
