We had the best day today, got out of the house with dh and after feeding bottles and rice cereal I thought it would be a good idea to cut finger nails before bed. Jenna's nails went fine. I then started with Hannah and forgot she had been sucking on her thumb and I cut that nail but got a hugh chunck of skin with it. She screamed so loud. The bleeding would not stop, so I called my mom who it holding her now. I can't stop crying and shaking. I feel so bad. Why didn't I pay more attention? How is she going to sleep? How is she going to suck her thumb? The bleeding stopped after 2 hours. I can't believe I hurt her. Thanks for listening. Dh is gone till late and I think my mom is getting tired of my crying. I just want to be a good mom. Tracy

Poor thing! For some reason I ALWAYS end up cutting my daughter's thumb when cutting nails. I have not done this to my son. It does bleed forever. She'll be fine! You're not a bad mom.

She will be fine! I promise, cutting her finger does NOT make you a bad mom!!

We've had exactly one trip to the ER. Yep, when I was cutting DD's fingernails before bed and cut her finger. When it was still bleeding after a few hours of being elevated, and when her crib looked like something from a bad movie, well, I took her to the ER. They didn't laugh me out of the joint, either. I'm sure I was neither the first nor last mom to show up under those circumstances.

Take a deep breath, and don't worry if your mom is tired of you crying, either! Give your DD a big hug, and don't worry about her thumb, it will be fine.

    I'm guilty, too! Don't worry. It's a casualty of motherhood/babyhood. She'll be fine.

guilty here too...not with the twins YET. I was so bad with Micah that I finally decided to pay the babysitter extra to do it for me. She had two kids of her own so I knew she could handle it.

I cut Sean's thumb right after I got him out of the NICU --- I felt soooooo guilty. There is no way that this makes you a bad mom, otherwise almost all the other moms out there are bad too because we've all accidently hurt our kids! [IMG]

Did the same thing to my oldest who was also a thumb sucker. She will be able to suck her thumb and soothe herself to sleep. You aren't at all a bad mom, I think it is just one of those things that happens. I do it to myself more then them! Cry if you need to, you are allowed. I am sorry it happened, but I know she will be fine!

I've done it too...twice. And what's even worse is that the second time I didn't even notice till about 20 minutes later when I saw blood all over the PNP sheet.

Guilty here, too... I've done it with two of my three girls. [IMG] And I've cried both times right along with them. It's a horrible feeling, and they bleed forever, but it's an accident and it just happens sometimes. My 5 year old likes me to tell her the story of the time I cut her finger. She finds it funny, especially because she can't remember it. Don't be too hard on yourself. You're not a bad mommy. [IMG]

Me too!!! Right after I got them home from the NICU, it is such a horrible feeling. Now I wait and wait to do them because I am scared of doing it again.

Oh, yeah ... totally did this. Twice! That's why I don't cut their nails anymore. I file them. And, that doesn't really do the job so I'm always getting scratched. I've heard the best way is to tear them after baths ... I am too afraid to try that, also. Wait until you injure them another way ... bumping into walls, etc. It took me a long time to realize this must just be a part of life as a parent. The secret part.

You're not a bad Mom, I've cut Skylar's finger once and I felt so bad. It's because they keep moving around so it's not your fault.

Man I am guilty with doing this with all my kids. Poor Nathan didn't come away from a single trimming without a bleeding finger for quite a few months (don't know why his were so hard to cut). I just let Brandon's grow until he starts inflicting pain on my boobie before I cut his. I was so traumatized after the boys I just dred clipping his. Good news is she doesn't remember it already. Gotta love infant memory.
