Did any of you skip sippy cups? My DH keeps saying he doesn't want them to use sippy cups unless we're going out somewhere...he wants them to learn to use regular plastic kid cups from the get go. Of course we haven't even tried it yet because the pedi said they don't really need any water. I was going to just go pick up a set of small lightweight plastic baby cups and try putting a tiny bit of water in it to hold to their lips. I know they won't be holding it theselves for a while with no lid! To me, it seems like you could do sippy cups first until they get used to holding them and then try to transition, but he wants to skip them altogether except for car rides. What do you think? They've never really had bottles so they don't know how to hold anything to their mouths.

We had gotten little cups as a gift for them. We let them try it after they mastered sippy cups. All they did was spill the water all over them. So, for us, it didn't work.

That's exactly what I picture...wet babies, wet mommy, wet floor. I think he heard the pedi say not to bother giving bottles of water just to go straight to cups (since they don't take bottles and don't need water) and thought she meany cup cups, not sippy cups. I'm not exactly sure why else he'd oppose them...I asked, and his answer was that he didn't want them to be using sippy cups when they're 7 (an indirect insult to a friend's kid, I think). Not totally sure why...just curios to see if anyone here skipped sippy cups, and if so, why.

How about a straw sippy instead of the regular ones? Maybe that might be a nice compromise. Either that or give them a cup, but he has to change their outfits after each meal and snack ;)

We use the straw sippy cups. that way when we are out in public every restuarant has a staw so I never have to worry:) We practice with regular open cups in the bathtub.
My Lactation consultant (also the public health nurse) has recommended regular open cups from the get go. The problem with "sippy" cups is that parents put juice etc in them and let their kids tote them around all day and hang in their mouth --- that causes bad bites, tooth decay etc.

My kids CAN drink out of an open cup but I have to help control it otherwise it would be all over everyone!

    That's a good idea, too.

I read about the tooth decay issues with sippies, but I don't plan to give juice anyway and when I do give something other than water, I'll be careful not to let them have it with them all day, just at whatever meal or snack. That was the only problem I read about, too.

Thanks for the advice! I think I should take it as a sign that no one posted to say "we never used sippies." Maybe with one baby you'd be able to supervise well enough, but I'm thinking for sanity's sake, at least a straw sippy could be a lifesaver!

    hi
ive just started to use a sippy cup with the lid off with my two. mainly because they just cant get the hang of drinking out of the sippy cup. its quite a hard one where they have to press down and suck really hard to get the water out. so i offer them water after lunch. i put a muslin under their chin today but usually they are so mucky after eating that i need to change them anyway. oran has got the hang of it but brook still splutters a bit. only been a week or so. i left a small bit of water in the cup and gave it to brook just so he could see what would happen when it was tipped. we have a plastic sheet on the floor under their highchairs so its easily cleaned.
i shall get some easier sippy cups so they can drink themselves but i think i will keep up using a cup at lunchtime so they learn. although i dont think it will be a prob.. ds used a sippy cup - cant remember when he stopped using it, probably about 3 years? but still most children use sports bottles at school so they can drink water whenever they like.
