I think that Morgan's cold might have progressed into croup. Ugh! She's had a green thick runny nose for about a week and it's started draining into a raspy cough. She was just at the pedi yesterday for their 18 mo. visit and I was afraid she had an ear infection, but no, that was Reagan instead. Ha! Lovely!

Anyway, I went into check on them a few minutes ago b/c Reagan started crying for some odd reason (she couldn't find her blankie in her crib) and Morgan tossed around for a minute or so and all of the sudden she let out this bark of a cough and I thought, "OH NO!" So, I'm guessing she has croup.

I've had the cool mist humidifier on in their room for the past few days, hopefully that will help her out. At least the weekend is coming up and I can be home with her.

BTW, croup isn't contagious is it? I don't think it is, but I'm always confused on stuff like this.

Oh heck yeah, it's contagious! Adults can even get it, but it shows up more as laryngitis I'm told. Gabe was in the ER a couple months ago with it and they said the girls would probably get it too. If she really starts with the bark like coughing, put your shower on as hot as it'll go to make steam and take her into the bathroom and sit in there with her for about 10 mins. Then, if it's still not gone, take her outside for 10 mins. in the cool air. We ended up in the ER b/c Gabe's wouldn't go away.

I am the Croup Queen!! My 6 year old gets it at least once or twice each winter, and Michael had it a few weeks ago. Actally there is new findings that the shower steam does not help. If it is bad enough, I do take them to the ER for a steroid shot to keep the airway from getting to swollen. Croup can be very scary for parents, don't expect much sleep tonight. Keep us posted. We get it quite often here. Take her for ride in the car if she has problems breathing tonight. I find my boys will open up after 20-30 minutes in a cold car. If it doesn't work then you'll be that much closer to the ER.

Croup is very contagious is what my pedi told me. We just went to doctor yesterday with it. He prescribed a steroid to give every 6hrs. After the first dose I could tell an amazing difference. My pedi also said if he has trouble to open the freezer door and let him breathe in very cold air or take him outside on very cold night.

Wed. afternoon I took my baby to ER because i was so scared. He woke up from his nap gasping for air and barking of course. Stupid & ignornant ER doc told me (after doing chest xrays and drawing blood) that he had pneumonia, but didn't need to be hospitalized. I went straight to panic mode. I didn't get his prescription for antibiotics filled until i took him to real pedi Thurs. morning. Pedi said it was definitly not pneumonia but croup instead, what a relief! No antibiot. needed.

It depends on the type of croup. Spastmatic croup is not contagious. Viral croup is VERY contagious and spreads quickly.

Cold air seemed to work best for us as well. Car rides or sitting on the porch in a blanket.

We have also had steriod shots but cold air usually works...

    Hope all is well soon!

    I haven't read responses.....so.....here goes

I HOPE YOU WENT TO THE DOC!!!! Croup is dangerous!!

You will hear a "wheeze" sound on the breathe coming IN! That's the danger. The airway is restricted and could close!! Easily treated, but danger!!

Hope she is okay!!! Croup is scary! We have had awful episodes and have learned a lot from it. If you have a nebulizer...that is a life saver. We use it with Xoponex. It saved us from having to bring my oldest son to the er in Dec. What also helped was wrapping him up and walking him around outside (which is a blast around 3am).
We have steroids on hand for all our kids and they are the best route if you need them. My dr always told me...if you can hear them breathing across the room...go right to the ER.

Good luck and hope your babies are better soon!

Yes croup is contagious! Michael had it the 21st of December right before we went on our long trip. We took him to the hospital. Then Mikayla got it while she had the stomach flu. Both of my babies were in the hospital, but Mikayla was in longer because of croup and the stomach flu.

The doctor told us to bring the babies out in the cold air. Humidifiers are also good as well as hot steamy showers.

    Croup is very contagious!!
If you have a nebulizer, that might help. My boys always tend to get it a few times a year.

Hi! Very new here but this post caught my eye b/c one of my 2 year olds had a cough that we just couldn't get rid of last month. It was a REALLY awful cough that was so hard it caused him to vomit several times a day. My MIL INSISTED it was croup b/c it was a really hard persistent cough that kinda did have a "bark-like" quality to it... We took DS to the Dr. several times (and to 2 different Dr.'s too) b/c of my MIL insisting it was croup and that the Dr.'s diagnosis was wrong (gotta love "MD" MIL LOL). Dr's continued to insist it wasn't croup. But, just b/c it wasn't croup for us, doesn't mean it isn't for Morgan and a trip to the Dr. is best right now.

So, from what I could figure out, croup is an infection of the throat and vocal cords (or larynx)... It is this swelling that causes that distinctive wheeze and seal bark cough. The infection (croup) is caused by a virus. When children younger than 5 years of age have the infection, it is called croup. In those older than 5, it is called laryngitis. Croup often begins like a cold, but then fever, cough and difficulty breathing develop. And, if it is croup, over the counter medications will not help, if it is, your Dr. will give you some tips on what to do to alleviate a croup episode.

My Dr. recommended this link to me to get my MIL off my back [IMG] But if Morgan has croup, it may be a really big help!

I hope Morgan feels better soon!
