I heard DS barking like a dog last night and then struggling to breathe, so I rushed him to the clinic/hospital. They were concerned as well, and that actually scared me even more! They gave him 2 nebeulizer steriod treatments and an injection as well. Then sent me home and said they are 90% sure he will be ok - like, what a stupid thing to say to me - so I did not sleep one wink last night as I was checking on him constantly. It seems to be a bit better today. I have also been using hot steam from the shower and using a humidifier in his room.

I am hoping that DD does not get it as well...I know its contagious! Argh! And, of course DH is out of town, he will be back tomorrow. That was my first trip to the emerg with DS and I was so scared I was shaking like a leaf. A lot of it was because I am in a new country that isn't the most medically advanced, and they dont have reliable ambulances here so you MUST drive yourself to a hospital. So I was driving to the hospital with DS on my lap, because I needed to know that he was breathing, and if he was in his carseat I couldn't be sure.

I am hoping that this doesn't last long...I am still on the verge of tears today...

We went through croup at our house too when Ezra was 8 months old. I thought he was dying. I still remember it clearly. Elias caught the cold that proceeded it but not the infection that caused croup and, at that age, they were sharing everything and everything went into their mouths. Also, they didn't tell me at the ER but the steroids only really start working in about 24 hours so he should be much better today. That being said, I think I held him for 72 hours straight. He could not sleep lying down without getting another attack so he slept laying against me.

Fun times! but, thankfully, it has never repeated itself.

My DS had a little bit of this recently. The dr. gave us a prescription. We put 2 tsp. into a little bit of juice (dr. said it's bitter) and he drinks it. It's a steroid, which takes 8 hours to kick in, but then he was good overnight. He was having a little bit of the wheezing after sleeping a while. I hope he's better soon .

We've had croup here too. A good thing to do as well, is go in the bathroom and turn on the water like you are starting a bath to really hot. Make sure the door is closed and let the water run. Sit in there with DS, the steam is good for croup. Hope he feels better soon.

Croup is aweful. We have dealt with it a few times. Also the cold air from a freezer will help open up the airways or a trip outside in the cool air.

    Isis-
My older dd had this happen when she was about 5 months old-I could hear her breathing weird on the monitor and when I went in to her room it seemed like she was struggling to breath. My dh and I jumped in the car and rushed her to the ER-and I held her on my lap in the back seat. It is really scary when you dont know what is going on.
It was the middle of january when this happened and honestly by the time we got to the hospital she was already doing better. I guess the cold air opened her throat, (larnyx sp?) which is swollen shut and that is what causes the horrible sounding cough and make it appear difficult to breath. Extreme temp changes apparently help-they actually told us we could open the freezer door and stick her face in there! lol
They gave her a steroid shot and she had no symptoms by the next day.
    So scary though!

Thanks guys for all your nice words and suggestions. DS was better today, has a bad cold and still a cough, but not like it was last night. DS had some problems falling asleep tonight (which never happens, we put him down to bed and he is out in 15min, normally, but tonight he was still up and crying on and off an hour later, so I gave him tyelnol, sat in the bathroom with the hot water going, and cuddled him lots), I think he is finally asleep.

I have a good friend here (she actually works for my DH) and she took the day off (since DH is the boss he easily let her do that) and she came to my house and hung out and helped with the kids so that I could try and nap - but I was so worked up that I couldn't actually sleep. At least I rested though. It is so nice to have friends come through when you really need them! : )
