At my doctor's appt. today and I was scolded by one of the pregnancy police (not the doctor but some old ladies in the waiting room!) that I am not supposed to be sitting with my legs crossed. She said that it can cause the babies umbilical cords to become kinked or tangled.

This sounds rediculous to me, and highly illogical that my crossed legs would do anything to the umbilical cord, but I can't stop thinking about it, so I figured I would post the question...

Has anyone heard of this? Is it an old wives tale? Is there any validity to it at all?

Never heard that one! I think that it is better for your circulation not to cross your legs though!

How is raising your hands above your head gonna cause that. I know old people are wise but geez the crazy things they come up with!

  7. I haven't heard this wives tale but when i was hospitalised prior to delivering my two I was told by the midwife that crossing your legs while in bed can increase the risk of blood clots.

I've never heard of that either. I, too, have heard about the raised arm thing but it's not true.

Shoot I can't even get my knees together. DH says that is how I got into the miss to begin with ;)

But yes, you aren't supposed to cross your legs because of your own circulation problems. It can increase varicous veins and swelling. I had heard the above old wives tale about the cord from my grandmother. It must be something from that era.

Your lucky you can still cross yours. I can barely cross my legs. I am only 21 weeks, but naturally I have big legs and hips. But I can say I have never heard that before that it hurts the babies. How funny !!!

For me crossing my legs make thems sore. My mother n law tells me not to reach either because I might choke the baby. But on the other hand she also said that I should not stand up and eat...dont ask me why because I dont get it?

I heard this one every time someone in my family got pregnant. And I was plagued with it when I was pregnant. This phrase comes mainly from the northern US and German background families from what I understand. I asked where people got that from once and my granny told me that it has been said in our family for many many generations. Of course it totally NOT TRUE but it was used as a way to tease the mother to be. I crossed my legs with all of my children at various stages of pregnancy and I have never had any problems like the cords crossing or kinking up. That is totally an OLD WIVES TALE--lol. So if you happen to see that lady again then you can tell her that "telling fibs can make her life shorter" lol--I'd like to see the look on her face at that--hehe.

    Lots of love!
