    Hello!
We need two new crib mattresses.

I was just given two Ikea brand mattresses at a baby shower.

Does anyone know anything about these? I registered for Serta brand, I believe.
I was told the Ikea are safer as far as toxins, etc.

They are very soft though and that worries me. We still have to see if they fit in out crib.

    Any input appreciated.
    Thank you!

We have the IKEA cribs and IKEA mattresses, and they seem fine to me, I believe they are the standard crib size. We don't put bumpers or stuffed animals in the cribs, I am sure you know the drill having older children.

Just sharing this, FWIW. The idea of mattress toxins really bothered me when I was setting up my girls' room. We ended up getting gas-impermeable plastic covers. The site below has a lot of info. It made sense to me, and I try to give these to expectant moms I'm close to. The science seems sound, and it's pretty important.

Thank you so much! I never even considered mattress toxins and am at the point in my pregnancy where everything can freak me out! My little guy who just turned three has been sleeping in our walk in closet since he was born on a crib mattress that is- at the youngest 8/9 years old- and I am hoping it was detoxed enough because he has been in that small space all these years!!!

The mattress are really flimsy. I do not know which ones that bought but they are not firm AT ALL when laid on a firm surface (hard wood floor) and one of our cribs has a spring bottom. Pondering just using them for my older kids (5 and 3) who are on crib mattresses and bringing the old ones up for the twins- but I am not sure what to do. We still haven't had time to actually see if they fit the crib- because, of course, if they don't- it is a moot point in some ways.

    Thanks for the feedback.

Feeling like life is scary over here!

I believe Ikea has a fantastic environmental reputation, much better than most American companies. They have to meet European safety standards, which are more rigorous than American standards with respect to chemical toxins in children's products. So there's that. As for how soft/hard they are, I'm not familiar enough with them to comment. I bought foam crib mattresses for my girls. They are super firm on one side and slightly softer on the other for when the girls are in toddler beds. They were more expensive than traditional coil mattresses but were very highly rated in Baby Bargains and in other sources.
