Ok, aside from the obvious SIDS thing, when & why did you remove your crib bumpers?

My boys have had bumpers since day 1. Lately, I've found them jammed up against them, so I figure having them on is a good idea. Then, 2 days ago, I woke to Conner crying & when I checked on him, he was stuck between the bumper & crib rails with his arm out the rail. I think he could've gotten out, had he tried, but it still made my husband believe we need to remove the bumpers. I told him he'd probably be sticking out the rails a LOT more if those bumpers weren't there!

My original thinking was to keep the bumpers on until they were used as a climbing device to get out of the crib ;). But what are your thoughts???

I removed them with my dd when she was able to stand up in the crib, but I put them back in the next day because she kept crashing into the rails. I never removed them again. I agree with you- the bumpers are keeping him from getting stuck more often! Good luck!

We still have them. They always sleep with head jammed against them, so I want them there. I think they can climb with or without them (mine alwasy stand now) so that won't deter the climbing (they are only 8 in wide so it won't stop them). I plan on leaving them in until they are out of the crib.

We never had traditional padded bumpers. When they were tiny and not moving around I really couldn't see the point - why do you even bother with these? Just because they are cute and came with a crib set? Sorry, I just never saw the point. And they are so dis-recommended from all safety experts and pedi's anyway, that it seems like a waste of money to me. We just bought crib sheets, no set.

Sometimes the babies end up sleeping with their heads against the crib slats, but it doesn't do them any damage, and if it doesn't bother them enough to wake them up, then I don't see the problem.

I just recently got one of the breathable mesh things - only because I was so tired of climbing down behind the crib to dig out the pacifiers that fall out of the crib. this one tucks way down below the mattress so they can't get their limbs caught, and it's mesh so they can breathe through it if they did get their faces up against it.

We still have them in and the boys are 17 months. They sleep with their faces against them and they also use them as pillows and foot props.

    Hi Andrea! :D

We got rid of our bumpers when the girls were like 3 months old b/c it was much easier to change the sheets without them, and I was changing sheets ALOT with my little pukers :) I've never had any issues with anyone getting anything stuck or hurting their head while they were sleeping. Sometimes a limb will be sticking out when but nothing has ever gotten stuck. So yea for me they were a big waste of money but that's just my opinion! See ya around :)

Ours are still in, although I did have to take DD's and push it halfway down between the crib slats and mattress b/c she liked to put her hand underneath and it would get stuck. We have never had a problem and probably won't take them out unless we do. My DD loves to use hers as a foot prop and in the morning it is so cute b/c both her and DS pull the bumper down a bit and peek at each other through the crib slats.

3 years old because we transitioned from cribs to beds.

Not sure if it would be helpful in your case but I weaved the bumper in and out of the slats, it took a little trial and error to figure out how many in and how many out to get all the way around but it worked really well for us!

I put the breathable mesh ones on to keep arms and legs from hanging out and it's working great so far. It also keeps a little cushion between their heads and the slats.

I took them out a couple of months ago but DD was getting aggitated when her arm would get caught in the bars even though she could have taken them out. So I put them back and I just pulled them down between the mattress and the sides so they are a little higher than the mattress but they can't get underneath them and that seemed to do the trick. We loose less paci's, she sleeps cuddled up (since that is how she sleeps next to me) and she sleeps longer and better.
