Crib bumpers

I'm just curious how many people use or don't use crib bumpers. Also, if you don't use them, when did you stop? I'm looking at new bedding (not for right now, but maybe the next couple of months) and just curious if I need them or not. Currently I have the breathable kind, but it doesn't seem to help much keeping them inside their cribs. There always seems to be a leg or arm hanging out.

    Thanks!

We don't use them. We have to wake up at least once or twice during the night to remove a leg or two from between the slats. Planning to move them to separate cribs, probably this weekend. Hoping that with a whole crib they'll be able to keep their legs in!

We did use them. The girls seemed to like to snuggle up against them. And, while I am a worrywart in some ways, that was just not something I worried too much about.

Given that your twins are already 9 months and used to sleeping with the breathable bumpers, my question is whether it bothers them to have an arm or leg sticking out. If they're getting caught in the slats and/or waking up because they're uncomfy, then you might want to start using normal bumpers. But if the babies are sleeping fine anyway, then no need to switch.

ETA: We also never took the bumpers away, even when the babies started pulling up. They never tried to climb on them and even if they had, I can't see how it would have given them much help in climbing out. So they had bumpers from 4 months (when they started sleeping in their cribs) until 3+ years when we switched to big kid beds.

We did not start out with crib bumpers...but then put them on when DD would get her leg stuck and it bothered her. I believe that was around 7-8 months and we just took them off about a month ago.

We took the bumpers that came with their bedding set off when we moved them into their cribs because I heard so many dire warnings about them. We've never had an issue with arms/legs getting stuck in the crib slats, but the boys usually do wake up with crib-slat-shaped dents in their heads. ;)

How about the quilts? When (if ever) do you use those?

We used the bumpers that came with the bedding set from day one. We removed them around 10 months, when the kids started pulling up. Really, it didn't give them that much extra height ... but what really made us take them out was how friggin' hard it was to change the sheets with the bumpers on!

We still have never used the comforters.

I think the current recommendation is to not use them, do more harm than good. We don't use them, but then again, we still don't use the crib, lol, maybe someday soon I hope.

The SIDS Alliance says you should never use a quilt or blanket in the crib. Only when they move to a toddler bed.

With my DD we used the crib bumpers and never took them off - we never had any problems with her climbing on them and I don't think she would have gotten much height out of them anyway. We also have the bumpers on the twins' crib and will probably keep them on unless we have a problem. We only really used the comforter a few times and not until my DD was much older when we didn't have to worry about suffocation. Good luck!

We use regular bumpers. When DD started burying her face in them to sleep, I got worried and took them out for one nap. It only took that one nap for her to get her arm stuck and she was screaming. I put them back on. I'm not crazy about her sleeping with her face in the bumper, but I try not to worry too much. We haven't used the quilts except for playing on them. I plan to use the quilts when they are toddlers.

I used the bumpers until they were big enough to start standing. Then they just kept stepping on them & crushing them down so I finally just took them off. It does make changing sheets so much easier. As for blankets, I did use them in the crib (even though it isn't recommended  ) but probably not until they were a year old or so.

I've used the bumper since birth with all 4 of my kids. The recommendation is based on the thicker more expensive bumpers that aren't breathable. The "cheaper" ones I have from my set from babiesrus are much much thinner and you can breathe through them. I use them until I change to a toddler bed.

I also use blankets from birth, but that's my personal choice. I only use the quilt as a "cover up" when they were babies, on the lower half of their body while they were swaddled to kind of keep their warmth in. Now they sleep with a thinner flannel blanket and a thicker cotton blanket over them.

I used the regular bumpers until they went to toddler beds. They used them as pillows and foot props for over a year. We never had any issues with them.

We used them starting around 6 months when their legs were chunky enough to get stuck in the bars, but had to take them out around 11 months when they learned to pull themselves up. We had mini cribs so bedding sets never fit. We just bought cream colors (bumper pad/blanket/sheets) and they worked great and looked good too. We used blankets in their cribs b/c our house is always 72/74 degrees in the summer and 68 in the winter. They got cold. I don't think it's worth the $$$ for a bedding set when there are plenty of cute crib sheets and blankets out there.

We just recently started using crib bumpers. We have the breathable type, and really the only reason we are using them at all is to keep arms/legs/pacifiers in the crib at night. So far they are working great.
