I was wondering when am I supposed to remove the bumper pads? My DD has now learned to rollover and sit up in her crib, and looks like very soon will be able to pull herself up to standing. I know we need to lower the crib matress, I just wasn't sure about the bumper pad. Thanks.

My boys are 11 months and I still have them on.... not that that is the right answer or anything!! My guys are starting to climb a little.. so I probably should take them down...
That would be my real answer: when they are thinking of using them to climb up to get out of the crib they should be removed!!

I kept my girls bumper pads up until well over a year probably until around 15mths or. My son is already standing in the crib but not on the bumper, as long as the crib mattress is all the way down you should be fine for awhile. The thing I would look for is if they stood on it where does the top bar come up to on them. If it's closer to the chest then I would get rid of it.

I still have mine on, but have them stuffed down around the mattress so they are barely peeking above it, basically just to keep stray pacis from jumping out!

We still have ours in the cribs. I don't plan to remove them unless I see a need.

I never had them, not with my first and not with the twins. In Europe nobody knows what bumper pads are anyway. My hospital also advised against them. I never missed them either, so not worth the risks or the cost.

With my previous two I always removed them when they could pull up to standing in the crib. That's when I heard to do it because of the risk to standing on them to get out. HTH!

I kept them in the entire 3 years they were in cribs. What I did when they got mobile was weave it in and out of the rungs, it took some trial and error to figure out how many in and how many out to get all the way around but it worked for us.

I just took them off of our dd's crib. She would roll arond and scoot until she was under the pumper pad, so her head was in between the crib bars and the bumper pad. All you saw was her body from the neck down- this made me really nervous so I took it off. Now she scoots all the way to the crib bars but her head is just pressed up against them. Our ds doesn't move around too much and doesn't seem to even care about the pad.

I took out DS's the other day, but am going to put it back in because all the pacifiers are falling through the rungs!!! That causes a real problem when he's looking for one in the middle of the night.

We still have them at 17.5 months. I did sort of squish them down between the mattress and the rails so they are not as tall, but neither of my twins has ever shown an inclination to stand on them.

My understanding is that they aren't to be used, period. Maybe this is relatively new. This is a bummer, though, because they are so cute!

I took mine off when my DD started moving and rolling. They have been off since she was 3 1/2 months. She can get herself all around the crib and I didn't want her suffocating.

We never removed ours either. Neither of my kids ever stood on them or really played with them, so I have kept them on.

Both of mine still have theirs in. DD will push hers down as lay on it. We never took my oldest DD's out of her crib.

I don't use them now and will not get them. They are not worth the risk for me. Plus, I don't get the point of them, other than they are supposed to look cute? To answer your question though, I think you should remove it when the babies start moving around enough to get their faces up on it. The reply below that said her baby got her head in between the pad and the crib is so scary!

    I agree. They terrified me.

Since the crib rail went down, they never fit right anyway.

We've never used them either - again same reason - not worth the risk. In Canada they strongly advise against them d/t increased SIDS risks and getting stuck between the crib and the pad.

I still have them on and plan to keep them on until my girls aren't so active in their sleep. Without them their little arms get stuck between the rails and I don't want them to break a arm.

    I think it's a real American thing, isn't it?

Here's another great link about the use of bumper pads:

    http://babyproducts.about.com/od/recallsan...umpersafety.htm

I particularly think this is important to mention because it hasn't been brought up yet:

    QUOTE
Rebreathing of air is another concern with crib bumper pads. The bumper reduces the flow of fresh air around baby during sleep. The American Academy of Pediatrics suggests that some infants, when they are overheated or lack sufficient oxygen during sleep, are unable to arouse themselves enough to prevent hypoxia and death. The AAP states that re-breathing of air may in fact be a contributing factor to SIDS.

I haven't had our twins yet (they're due July 31) but I don't plan on using the bumper pads, cute as they may be!

I still have the bumper pads on the cribs. It is a good thing now that our Noah is standing in the crib at night. He thumped himself a couple of times last night on the way down. If we did not have the bumper in the crib I would hate to think of the potential head banging that would happen. :)

If bumpers are important to you and you are concerned about the rebreathing issue, there are such things as breathable bumpers. You can read about them here. The word bumper is not always cause for alarm.

We never put ours in due to the risks mentioned in pp. Wish I'd known about that before we spent the money! I weighed the pros and cons and decided I'd rather pick up the pacifiers and deal with a stuck limb than worry about breathing issues.

Mine haven't had them since about 6 months.

We've never used bumper pads. We do, however, have the mesh crib system that covers most of the crib. That way their arms & legs can't slide through the rails & get stuck. It's called the crib shield system.

I should add that we had the short mesh crib shield first with our oldest dd but soon replaced it with the model that covered the whole sides b/c she kept pulling on the shorter version. We love these crib shields. We got them at walmart for about $20. They are online.

Still have them. When I took one out to wash it, Mia got her arms stuck in the rungs. I have my weaved through the rungs.

We had to take the girls' out a few weeks ago because they learned how to pull it up (no matter how far I have it tucked) and get underneath it. With DS I didn't take his out until he was pulling up in the crib. He started using everything to climb out so that's why we removed it. That was around 6 1/2 months.
