I was wondering when everyone started giving their children crayons to color with. There's a nice children's toy store here that carries extra big crayons. I was thinking about getting some for the girls, but I'm unsure if there to young yet or not.

I've tried a few times, but Bell is still into eating EVERYTHING and this includes crayons. You can give it a shot, in the highchair and see how it goes.

I would give it a try Trish! I think that Emma might try to use them the right way, but Jake would just eat them! I haven't tried it yet!

Thanks ladies, I think I'll pick some up this weekend and see how it goes. I guess the worst that could happen is they get crayon shaving in their mouth. :) Yummy. :)

I think I started giving them crayons at about 19/20 months and they would still eat them. Once the turned 2 they learned to not put them in their mouths, but will draw everywhere. So be sure you get the washable kind!

Good point! I didn't even think about that. :)

I think I introduced them about a year old. I would get a huge poster board and tape it to the kitchen floorm. I gave them each a couple of fat crayons and they went to town! :)

P.S. Did I mention your girls are gorgeous with all that super cute hair!? :pardon:

My son is 3 1/2 and he uses them only at the kitchen table - we didn't notice that he left once with the crayon and wrote on the walls. He was about 2 1 /2 at that point - from now on, in the kitchen only

    Hello,

My boy has found a crayon in his father desk yesterday while I was cooking for them, when he arrived in the kitchen, his tong was so green that I was scared the ink has dammaged him. Sorry I don't have the words to explain what I want to say...
    He is 18 months now.
But I believe that they could start to play with crayons around a table and if I look after them (it would be better with little "school dressed"...).

    Bye.

We gave them crayons about 3 weeks ago... since them I have diligently worked with them with the crayons for about 15 min a day, mostly b/c I read somewhere that they should be able to scribble at this point, but now after reading all these posts, I guess its normal for them to still be eating the crayons. I was worried, but this puts my mind at ease. I even tried dipping the crayons in vinegar to discourage them from mouthing them, and guess what? They still ate it. I wonder about my little monkeys sometimes!

Give it a shot. If they try to eat them put them away for another day. But how about trying Crayola Twistables. There isn't a good picture of them on the site but they're plastic on the outside and the crayon is inside. They're kind of like eyeliner that doesn't require sharpening. They're a little thin rather than chunky but their design might keep them out of their mouths.

We've tried them a couple times when we've been at a restaurant that has them for kids. My boys prefer to eat them too.

I haven't given mine crayons yet - too hard to police with all 3 of them - but older DD has crayola sidewalk chalk and one afternoon while she was drawing the babies each grabbed a peice and tried to draw too. Now I put it out for all of them to play with. It goes in the mouth a bit but they are learning "yucky" very quickly. They are non-toxic and I'm there while they do it. This way I don't have to worry about the walls, floor etc. They can make a mess of the back path and it's another great game to hose it off!

Our OT started with them at 13 mos. They weren't excited and ate them and then they tried to color everywhere... BUT we stuck with it, only in their boosters at the table and we worked on drawing, as the OT said that it was a very important skill and would help with fine motor coordination.... Now at 2 I leave crayons out all the time on their little table and with their easel and they pick them up and put them down at will and we never have eating or coloring the walls problems anymore...

I too used Crayola mini Twistable crayons that come in a plastic cover, like a marker, but crayon tip that sharpens on it's own.
My dd eats everything and these worked great. I taped paper to the floor and it was a fun new activity for my 16 month olds. I got them at Staples.

I about 2 months ago (14 months old) I started giving my babies crayons and paper in their highchairs. I make sure to put their pacis in so that makes them a lot less likely to try and eat them-[ from my experience. They just end up with very light marks on the paper. It keeps them busy while I make dinner etc. And my older DDs draw with them and show them how it works and they like that. I usually give them the chunky crayons but they have used regular, too.

We started out with Aquadoodle uses water and so hardly any mess. I have since gotten them the water paint books, the ones where you paint with just water and then the page turns colors they do Ok with it for the most part but once they get more of the hang of it will start on cayons and other stuff.

Ps. I do let them play with crayons at restrunts if they offer them but usally end up taking them away as they tend to start misbehaving.

    Good Luck

by 15 months they are supposed to be able to scribble. I would say go ahead and give them the crayons. you will have to watch them like hawks b/c they are going to try to eat them or peel all the paper off and eat the paper. :FIFblush:
i did give the girls fat crayons and lots of old coloring books to scribble in. they are fine with plain paper too. get the washable crayons so that when they color on the wrong things it won't matter (like walls, tables, and your clothes). My girls also like pencils. i like colored pencils more than regular pencils b/c they don't have erasers.

We do them everynow and then but they still like to put them in their mouth and ite the tips off. I would say go for it but keep a close eye on them.

    have fun!

Get the washable kind! If someone gets me the regular kind as a gift I put them aside for soap making (they make pretty colors and harder soap fyi) But you'll probably either want to save them for later, donate them or toss them. My kids always pooped the rainbow if I let them color before age 2.5.

Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions. I bought Crayola Twistables today, this way they won't poop the rainbow.;) I'm hoping to give them a try tomorrow, I hope they do good with them.
