I was SO excited to get the crayola beginnings for my two, since they are chunky and shaped for them to be able to scribble better, and finally got them over the weekend. i pulled them out today and......bear thought they were for throwing, ally would try to scribble with the wrong side, i ended up taking them out of the plastic things and letting them use like regular crayons (which they are)

$7.00 for 3 cute spinning tops and 3 pieces of triangular crayon....

anyone out there have fabulous success with them? i'm just going to go out and get regular big crayons for them now....*sigh* i have become victim to advertising and marketing ploy!

:hug99: We had a very similar experience here, too. It is frustrating, isn't it? :hug99:

I had visions of the commercial...my boys use of those were the anti-commercialized version of use!

I haven't seen the commercial for these, but I am impressed that you even tried coloring! My two would most likely just eat any crayons at this point. :D

Sandra :hug99: Being a Crayola junkie, I am so sorry to hear about your experience!!! I liked the fat one's and the rectangular one's at first! Those rock!

They make for very colorful poops as well!!

You're doing better than me already. I haven't gotten either boy to scribble anything, not once - I literally cannot get them to stop eating the crayons. We try again every few weeks, and so far it's always the same story. They bite off the tips, I show them how to scribble, tell them they're not to eat, etc. They do it again, and again, and again. Finally I give up in frustration, and they cry when I take their 'snacks' away. I literally don't think they've ever touched crayon to paper!

ETA: Adding to the frustration were all the questions on our 18 month appt. developmental checklist about scribbling/drawing. We had to answer that no they don't do any of those things yet, because they've never taken the writing utensils out of their mouths for long enough to try! They still scored okay on the checklist, but I felt the need to justify those 'no' answers to our doctor - who just laughed and said that eating crayons sounds about right. So then why put the questions on the checklist?! <_<

We didn't have success with these either. I tried them around 16 months and then around 18. I finally bought regular crayons around 18 months and they used them much better than they ever used the beginnings!

So glad to read we're not alone. I still haven't taken them off the shelf since our last "experiment." They sit there and every time I look at them and the bitten-off ends, I think, "grrrrr"

Not much luck here either. The girls were more interested in eating the crayons and since I only bought a 3 pack, fought over them most of the time. After a few tries they did start to get it a little bit but would try to write with the wrong side.

I am so glad we are not alone in the crayon eating! Our friend has a boy who is 17 months old and has been drawing with crayons for months. I wasn't really upset by my boys' total disinterest, but it is always reassuring to know you're not alone!

We just used regular crayons here - they love them for the walls

Yep - we had the same problems here with those things back when my boys were younger. When you think about it, or course it feels more comfortable for little hands to hold the narrower end of the 'egg' shape - why did they put the crayon on that end?

I must admit, though, that after tossing the crayon ones (and after many many months), I gave the paintbrush ones a try. They're a little better, though my boys only really started using them after they turned 2.

We have those beginners as a gift too. I don't know why they don't have a coverage at the end of the crayon?! My twins' are all done with their teething stage so they don't chew or try to put them in their mouth anymore. We started using the play-doh for now to play and go back to crayons every once in while. I let them do it outside on their picnic table because they scribble pass the paper!

I haven't tempt the fingerpaint yet.......not sure if I want to play with that yet!

I hated that set! Total waste of money for us. We went right to regular crayons!

We had the same experience- all eating, no coloring...but once they hit 18 months they started scribbling with the regular fat crayons. They still take the occasional 'nibble' but I view it as progress just the same! :D

I was soo disappointed when I opened ours as well. I got the boys them for X-mas last year when they were 1 1/2. They tried to suck on the toy part and the darn crayon broke right away. I took them back to the store, even the ones that were opened.

:wavey: I was a victim as well. I got them three stinkin' packs and they did the same thing you described your two doing. And then went and bought regular crayons for only .22 . <_<

I wish I had seen this post before I bought mine a few weeks ago. We haven't had any success either. They are actually too big for them to hold in their hands!! I hope to try regular crayons soon.

HA! Same here as most of you. I was so excited about the crayons, but now they're sitting on a shelf with tooth marks in them! I tried the Beginnings markers first and they were even worse because the girls held them by the wrong ends and just got marker all over themselves. We will wait a few months and try the regular crayons, I think.

I TOTALLY agree with this statement--at our 15 month check up, they asked the same thing and I was like "HUH"? I left feeling pretty crappy, but reminded myself again that every kid is different. Why don't they just ask what kinds of things they are doing and address the ones that are of concern?!?

I got the crayola beginnings too, within the first 5 minutes, they bit or slammed all the points off UGH!

That is exactly what my two did. Although Milena actually attempted to draw..but I think the spintop thing is a little too big for her hand. She can't get a good grip on it. But yeah, they have chewed the tops off all three crayons...I think I'll have to try watercolors or something else..
