Cradle Cap

How do you get rid of cradle cap? I keep hearing such conflicting information. Can anyone give me some tried and true tips? Jack's is getting really bad all of a sudden.

 

I always heard to rub warm baby oil or olive oil into it and then when it was soft, try to remove it. Don't be surprised if his hair falls out. That's normal.

 

I rubbed olive oil on the head about 15 min before bath. then i would wash it out like normal - it only took a couple days!

 

Both my boys had it and I used some baby iol on their scalp and then ren a comb through it. It worked great.

 

I did the oil thing with my daughter because that's what my pedi at the time suggested. I think I used sunflower oil - all of her hair did eventually fall out but I don't know if it would have fallen out anyway.

Since then I've changed pediatricians and when the twins started to get it really bad, she gave me a prescription for a mix of Aquaphor & 2% hydracortizone and it's been a miracle. I don't know if it's because of that or not, but thankfully my twins hair hasn't fallen out (yet) and it's actually started coming in thicker and longer!

 

1. Rub baby oil in their hair
2. Wait 15 minutes
3. Comb (not brush) the scalp. You might see some nasty flakies appearing.
4. Wash hair with Head and Shoulders. Make sure to rinse VERY thoroughly and avoid getting near the eyes (of course)

 

Head and Shoulders Shampoo. Just be careful around their eyes. Cradle cap is caused by seborrhea, which is the same thing that causes adult dandruff.

 

2 methods...

MILs method

Get some rubbing alcohol and using a cotton ball or washcloth dab the alcohol onto the scalp and let it sit for a few minutes until it evaporates. (When the alcohol evaporates it's really cold, so be prepared for screaming.) Wash babies hair thoroughly using one of those soft baby brushes to really scrub the soap around. This usually takes 1-2 times to work.

This method is more for newborns with a mild case of cradle cap.

My method

Rub oil (like mineral, baby, olive) onto their scalp about 15-30 minutes before a bath. While their hair is still oily comb through it with a very fine tooth comb and get up as many flakes as possible. Wash their hair thoroughly using one of those baby brushes to really scrub their head good. May take 2-4 times to work.

This method is better for older babies and toddlers.

My MIL helped me get rid of Dave's cradle cap using the first method and it worked really well. When I had my daughter the midwife told me her cradle cap would go away on it's own. It didn't and turned into these thick yellow scales (I know TMI) so I used the second method on her and it took care of it great. With the boys I used my Mils method then my method later when the cradle cap returned.

 

I tried the oils but what worked for us was Aquaphor.... although I cannot find it anywhere. I just happened to have sample from the hospital!!!

 

Thanks so much everyone. I will try the oil and talk to my pediatrician if that doesn't work. It was really mild and I thought going away, but it's come back like crazy the last few days. He's got a ton of hair - he's going to look so odd if it all falls out.

Okay, this is an incredibly stupid question, but just to confirm, you don't do it 2-4 times in a row, right. 2-4 times on their normal bathing schedule.

I'm really not an idiot, but we've had a rough few nights.
