One of my girls has cradle cap bad. Her head is very rough and very flaky...both sides all the way around the back. I currently don't do much for it. I use a brush on her head when I wash her hair but that's about it. If you have had this problem - did you do anything to try to help it get better? And, how long did it last? Thanks!

Both my boys had it and it just grossed me out (they didn't have much hair so it looked really bad). Our Dr. told us to put mineral oil on it for a few mins and then wash their hair. So at every bathtime (which was every other day) before I took their clothes off, I rubbed their heads and then by the time they were in the tub, it was okay to wash it off. It did make their hair kind of oily though.

Last week, Specky told us about something that worked great for her. Specky's Cradle Cap Solution

I'm using Specky's solution too :D DS didn't have it too bad and I did the brush on the head during hair wash and that worked for him. DD on the other hand is very stubborn (well her cradle cap is too ;) ). I used the Calendula Cream twice (I used once a day...not sure how much I should be using) and quite a bit has come off but it's not quite gone. It's definitely working way better than the brush during hair washing. We'll keep doing it till it's gone. It smells a bit strong but doesn't seem to bother her in the least. From what I've read once you get rid of it then it shouldn't come back. I'm hoping that is true - it has been for DS so far.

My son had really really really bad cradle cap for several months. Our ped told us to use selson blue or any dandruff shampoo will do at each bath, be very careful of the eyes as it is not tear free like most baby stuff is. Within a few days I saw a decrease in the cradle cap and within a few weeks it was gone, it would come back periodically but after 1 or 2 shampoos would be gone for a long time again....

please don't use mineral oil on your baby! it cannot be absorbed into skin and actually blocks pores.

Our ped recommended Nizoral shampoo for cradle cap. It is a dandruff shampoo and it worked great. You use a tiny amount and rub it in really good (like a little massage) and rinse. Be careful not to get it in the eyes when you rinse though because it isn't gentle, but it worked for us.

We're really cautious with anything we put on our babies' skin, since it can be absorbed and cause all manner of issues from increase chances of cancer, blocking pores, or mess with hormones and cause reproductive disorders later on.

California Baby makes a FANTASTIC cream that pretty much clears up cradle cap in a matter of hours. Someone posted about this miracle cream last week. It's the California Calendula Cream and it contains none of those scary ingredients that we are told to "trust."

The calendula cream works so well on my little Ronan, who had a very severe case of cradle cap.

ETA: I just looked at the link for Specky's solution, and that's it! :)

Sarah had cradle cap and I just never really did much about it. She has always hated having her hair/scalp messed with (still does, though she's learned to tolerate it better), and fortunately she had a lot of hair starting 5 months, so at least we didn't have to look at the cradle cap too much!

She actually still has it (though maybe at 3.5 it's just called dandruff :D ), but it's still under her hair and I just don't worry about it. Our hair stylist suggested Sea Breeze (the facial astringent from the 80s) -- she said a bit on a q-tip can clear it right up. I haven't bothered trying it yet, though.

One quidck note - anything with sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate could be the cause or could be contributing to lingering cradle cap. It's a known skin irritant and is in a lot of shampoos and soaps.
