Genevieve definitely has cradle cap. I know because DS had it when he was a baby. But she hadn't had it before and its pretty bad. What are your tips and tricks for getting rid of it?

    TIA!

One of my friends told me that selsun blue worked on her daughter's cradle cap.

My girls are almost 3 and have each gotten it again off an on this past year. I too thought we were way past the cradle cap stage! My hairdresser MIL's suggestion was to apply a baking soda/water paste during bathtime. I rub it in, then try to loosen it with a comb before I rinse it off. Then I shampoo as normal. It really does loosen the flakes. The only hard part about them having it when they're older and have more hair is that its harder to rinse and get the flakes out of the longer hair. Ususally if I apply it for 2-3 baths in a row, it helps to clear it up.

I've also heard to use dandruff shampoo on them, but I'm always worried about it getting in their eyes and burning.

My pediatrician recommends Head and Shoulders shampoo.

We use Selson Blue or Head and Shoulder Dandruff shampoo. I don't think it matters, as long as it's a dandruff shampoo. My kids get it on and off all the time (usually when their allergies flare up).

For those of you that use the dandruff shampoo, does it hurt their eyes?? G hates having her hair rinse as it is.

I put oil on her head and comb it out then I wash it with Neutrogena T gel. You have to be careful to not get it in their eyes, it will burn.

I would try the oil and soft brush method. You can use a small amount of T-gel to wash the oil out. Let us know how it goes, Laura!

One of my girls gets it too still. I have the cradle cap cream (has pooh bear on the bottle) and have tried lots of different things, but works really well is just brushing it or (warning ew) scratching it. She will sit on my lap when she is tired I will gently scratch her scalp and play with her hair. She LOVES this and it loosens the flakes and they wash out easily. Its also good she has a lot of hair so you really can't see it. GL!

my daughter had it as an infant
"what to expect the first year" suggested vaselline... i applied it pretty thickly and let it sit for a few minutes and then rubbed (applying some pressure) and it just all started coming off
i will warn we lost some of her baby fuzz, too :(
but it helped and was painless
turns out vaselline is good for a LOT of things... dry skin patches, irritation, etc
we always keep a tub in the house
    good luck :)

Try mineral oil -- works like a charm if applied directly to spot for a couple of days. Does make the hair a bit greasy, but not too bad.

    Best of luck!

Caleb's got pretty bad cradle cap. I have applied mineral oil to loosen the scales and comb it out, which works, but then it's back in a few days. Ainsley had cradle cap off and on until about 2. For her, the dandruff shampoo finally knocked it out. She has pretty thick hair, so who knows, maybe it's still under there somewhere. I don't want to use dandruff shampoo on an infant though.

The pedi told me that cradle cap is just a baby's form of dandruff. Like PP's suggested above the sealsen [sp] blue shampoo.

Ok - so I am of the olive oil school....but my mother did research and "real" cradle cap is an infection and oil feeds it. It might look better for a while but it is not better. We are lucky and don't have problems right now, but when we do we'll use selenium sulfide (like selsun blue).

Sarah still has "cradle cap" (or maybe it's just dandruff) at age 3. Fortunately you can only see it if I pull her hair back tight, which she never lets me do... Other than that, it doesn't bother anyone but me, so I just try to ignore it.

Dandruff shampoo smells awful! You can use Dawn/Palmolive dish soap, it works great and smells much better! Dish soap is meant to cut through grease, but you do need to be careful of their eyes.
Also I recently switched to using johnson's baby oil wash and my girls have no signs of dry scalp anymore.

I forgot to mention that I used a plastic bristled baby brush to comb it all out (important step) :)
