My boys are 11 months and I am still pumping. But I am not making enough milk any more and we have been supplementing with about 8 oz of formula a day. Unfortunately it gives the boys pretty bad diaper rash. My MIL watches the boys while I am at work and is with them for all their meals during the day. Recently she has started to give them cows milk instead of formula. What do you think? Should I stop this and go back to formula? It is about 8 oz to top off bottles and a bit more in their oatmeal.

I would ask your pedi. I think most say to wait until 12 months for cow's milk, but I think that is because of the iron and other nutrients in formula and breastmilk. If they are getting mostly breastmilk, the little bit of cow's milk might be fine.

My pedi said as long as they are getting enough foods to get the iron and a balanced diet then to go ahead with the milk. Are they good eaters? And are you still giving them the fortified baby cereal?

We started the transition to milk at 11mths. But asking your dr is never a bad idea. Just to let you know, with some babies it can cause constipation at first while they are getting used to it.

we did at 11 mos (we did a milk/formula split for a bit) and then transitionned to full cow's milk just before their first bday. It went well, but like the pp said my DD, who is prone to constipation, got more so.

check with your ped but usually if they eating a varied diet it should be ok.

I agree with Gina, it never hurts to ask your pedi but I started the cow's milk transition when my two were 11 months old. I started off with a milk and formula combination and gradually reduced the formula until it was all milk.

Thanks guys this is what I needed to hear.

My guys eat pretty good. They split a jar of food with meat in it every night for supper and eat a fairly wide variety of fruits and veggies. I even discovered that I can add spinach to their applesauce and they love it.

We started the transtion at 11months as well, we just slowly swapped out the formula for milk and everything went great. DD still can't quite handle whole milk but the pedi said 2% is fine and to try the whole milk again in a month or so. Just watch for constipation, DD was affected by it but no DS!

As the others said, it never hurts to ask your pedi, but all my kids were switched to whole milk before their 1st birthday. 10-11 months for all of them. They were all eating a wide variety of foods, mostly our food and very little baby food, and our pedi was fine with us switching early.
