Hi all. I was mostly curious about when most babies will start holding their own bottles to feed themselves, and also when did anyone stop burping them in the middle of their bottles. I still try to burp them, and they get soooo mad that I've taken the bottle away for even a second, it's kinda funny. So anyway...just wondering. Thanks!

i bottle fed my dd, and she never held her own bottle. she could do it, but just never did. she gave it up at 12 months, so that might be why.

I think around 3-4 months we stopped burping in the middle of the bottle. My girls would get SOOOOO mad so we just made sure we got some real good burps at the end. It was sometimes more work to get a burp. We burped them until I realized when they were sitting up and moving around on the floor that they were making themselves burp, around 9 months.

My girls didn't start holding their bottles until around 8.5 months. One thing I was told by an EI therapist was to constantly put their hands on the bottle when they are feeding and push their elbows together, essentially teaching them the holding technique.

Just to add, one of the girls in my playgroup had twins holding their own bottles around 5 or 6 months I believe.

Same here! I just started skipping the mid-bottle burp and waiting until the end of the feed. As for holding their own bottles, mine are trying to "help" a little but it's actually more of a nusance at the moment!

I don't know if this is bad or not but I have 7wk twins and I just burp at the end or else they end up falling asleep and won't finish their feeding and then wake up 1/2 later to finish their bottle. We burp them and rub their backs for a good amount of time after their finish their bottles and they have been fine.

I don't remember when I stopped the mid-bottle burp, but they were both holding their own bottles by 6 months.

Hi, I don't remember when I stopped the middle of the night burping...probably when they would fuss like yours. My girls just now started to hold their own bottles...they are 10-1/2 months old...it's more because they are lazy than ability. My singletons held their own around 5-6 months. HTH!

My guys didn't do it until they were about 8 months old. We used bottle propper from LittleWonders.com called Bottle Bundles in order to assist in feeding them until they learned.

God I can't wait until mine can hold their bottles! I still have to burp my son or he will spit up. My daughter can suck back an entire bottle and then give a good burp at the end. Sometimes she will wak up fussing if we haven't gotten all the air out before she goes to bed, waking us up, but the second we pick her up it comes out and back to bed for her and us...

My girls are 11 weeks and I only burp in the middle if they get real squirmy during the middle of the bottle. At night I don't even try to burp, because they are so sleepy they will not burp. the only prob with no night burps is that they wake up pretty gassy.
    good luck missy
