could this be gas or something else?

This has been going on a since they were newborns. They will drink a couple of oz and try to refuse anymore. They will wiggle and squirm and turns their heads or just spit out the formula. Sometimes they will burp and take more sometimes not. The bottle they drink best is the middle of the night bottle. They will suck down 6oz and go right back to sleep. We do spit up some but not alot. It is very frustrating. They do not do this for every feeding, but at least twice a day they will do this. My mil says when they do this for her she will get a burp out of them and they will finish their bottle. Another small vent but I called her last night to see how much they do this at her house and she said some but just to burp them and it will be all better. She says all you have to do is patt on their tummy and it will sound like a drum. I don't why but this just drives me bonkers. I have patted on their tummy and it sounds the same when they eat or 2 hours later. sorry about that vent :p . & of course their stomach is going to sound different it has food in it. Any suggestions or ideas? btw my ped is clueless I think. When they were little and doing this I asked her about reflux and she blew me off and said they probably had a stomach bug.

Sounds like my Ellie, and she has reflux. The 1st part of the bottle always went well, and overnight feedings were the easiest. It wasn't every feed, so I wasn't so sure it was reflux either, but now it's amazing how much better our feedings go on Prevacid.

One thing you could try is Mylanta to see if it helps. I was told Mylanta Supreme is the best because it doesn't contain any aluminum (I think that's what it was). Even on the Prevacid I have to give a does every once in a while, and it helps quickly.

    Good Luck! Suzi

I agree, sounds like reflux. The overnight feeds are usually the best because they aren't as awake and aware of the pain. I would call the ped.

Sounds like my boys - especially the smaller of the twins. He would drink a little formula and then arch away, cry and then try again, but the same thing would keep happening. He also didn't spit up all that much. He could hardly get 2 or 3 ounces in. BTW - this was around 2-3 months old. My pedi recommended several things (Mylicon, changing formula, etc.), but in the end I called her and said I had had all I could take (the kid was MISERABLE!!) and basically demanded some kind of medication. He has been on Zantac ever since and is a completely different baby. After his first dose he sucked down 5 oz.

They are 7 months now and he still takes Zantac because the reflux came back. I weaned him off of it when we started solids at 4 months, but he started arching again and spitting up alot.

If your pedi doesn't take you seriously on this, I would consider changing doctors.

Sounds like reflux and possible dislike of formula. I have one refluxer and one non-refluxer. My refluxer behaves like that whenever he has formula. He is usually breastfed and doesn't like his hypoallergenic formula so he will only eat a little bit of it, and takes it best if it is nice and very warm (not HOT)-- a little tip that might help.

Good luck-- sorry you are going through such a stressful situation!

Yup, sounds like reflux. DEFINITELY push your pedi and if s/he isn't responsive, it's time to change. Many pedis apparently think that if theyre not screaming at every meal then it can't be reflux, bt- they're wrong!

See if the mylanta helps; i'd give it BEFORE a bottle, but remember ot watch the dosage carefully. there are medicine binkies (a pacifier with a chamber for the medicine and a hole in the paci so the baby just sucks it down; i found this a whole lot better than trying to administer meds w/ a syringe that mostly dripped out.

Good luck;it's awful watching your baby suffer like this. But do know that most babies eventually grow out of it; my girls are almost 8 months and they've been off their meds for a few weeks and while we still have some reflux where they spit up in a major way, it's NOTHING like those early months where i was changing their clothes - and mine - three times/day.

Also: try holding the baby upright for 30 minutes after each feed: it helps w/the gas. And mine slept in their carseats for a long time; then i read that they were NOT good for reflux because it sort of crunches their bellies, so they slept (swaddled) sort of perched on boppies until I got sleep wedges which held them in place. THAT was a nightmare; i'd have to stay up and make sure that they did not fall off the boppies nad plant their faces in the pillows surrounding them (so they wouldnt fall off the bed!) Hopefully it won't come to that for you, don't mean to be a bummer! But - definitely get the pedi to take you seriously or change doctors!

I agree with the PP's. Definitely sounds like reflux and the night bottles were the worst for us.

It sounds exactly like how mine used to be - especially my DS. We noticed a lot of improvement on a combination of Prilosec twice a day, adding rice cereal to the bottle and switching formula to Alimentum. After we made the formula switch they increased their feeds by 2 ounces - from 3 to 5 oz. in just a few days. They are now up to 6-7 oz. (thickened) 4 times a day. We also noticed a big difference in their ability to sleep extended periods of time.

I agree with PP. If your Ped. doesn't listen to you it's time for a new Ped.
