Could I be expecting twins?

    Hi everyone,

I am almost 31 weeks pregnant (1st pregnancy), and to date my Gynea has only confirmed one baby girl. I am starting to doubt that it is only one baby. Please can you give me your opinions on the following:

    1. Weight Gain: In the firt trimester I gained 3,7kg (8 pounds) despite having morning sickness until my 11th week. In the 2nd trimester I gained 12,6kg (27,7 pounds) - that was at my 28 week checkup...and I have been gaining ever since. I didn't start my pregnancy overweight and had a healthy BMI of 24. Since the beginning of my pregnancy I haven't been trying to eat for two as they say, I'm trying to listen to my body and only eat when I feel hungry. Why all this weight gain? Is it because there might be more than one baby?

    2. Swelling: Excessive swelling of my feet that started at 23 weeks. If I stay on my feet to long they get very tired and sore and start to swell. The last two weeks my feet looks swollen all the time even if I rest all day.

    3. High Blood Pressure: My blood pressure has been elevated the last week or so - I did see my GP about this, he didn't find any proteiens so its not pre-eclampsia

    4. Exaggerated Heartburn: No matter what I eat or drink I get heartburn.

    5. Tiredness: I feel tired constantly and this started very early on in my pregnancy.

    6. Fetal Movements: I feel movements / kicks / jabs in different parts of my abdomen at the same time. (I felt the first flutterings at 13 weeks and the first kicks at 17 weeks).

    7. My Gynea at first said it was a boy and it clearly looked like a boy to me too. Since then he has been saying it's a girl.

I don't know I could be wrong...but I'm really confused at the moment and need advice. I am going for my next check-up on Monday, 2nd March. In the beginnig of my pregnancy I had a hunch that it might be twins...but after several ultrasounds I was convinced it was only one baby. Now there is so many signs again that it could be twins.

Could the doc be missing a baby?

Have you had an ultrasound at all? :pardon:

ETA: Oops now I see that you have had several. I would say that you would have been able to see 2 by now.

This far along, you'd be able to see another baby at the ultrasound. At 19weeks, the entire screen was filled with my two boys heads. Your weight gain sounds normal as does your swelling. What is your uterus measurement? That would be a big sign. At 33 weeks, I was measuring 53 inches. I think your doctor is right and there is only one baby (though a healthy big baby) in there.

I would think by this point, with having several u/s's they would have seen 2 babies. :unknw:

I agree with the others, by this time you would have seen two babies in the u/s. Plus you belly would have measured much bigger then you are now with one.

Thanks for your comment. The doc hasn't taken my uterus measurement at all...I'll ask him to on Monday. What do you think about the movements though? Did you feel movements in different parts?

Yeah, I think an extra baby would be pretty hard to miss at 31 wks. All of the symptoms you are experiencing are perfectly normal and to be expected w/ singleton pregnancies, too. If you stand all day, your feet are going to be miserable and swollen no matter what. With my 1st pregnancy, I stood at my job until 36 wks. It was HARD.

Just take care of yourself, ask questions, and heed what your doctor tells you to do or not do. You're almost there...hang in there!!!

Definitely! I single baby has lots of room to "play"...much more so than two or more...and he'll use it. Feeling lots of kicks everywhere is just a sign of an active, healthy baby!

Yes, I felt movements all over. Don't forget you will feel movements from the baby's head/arms/legs and butt! I went in for an u/s one day and asked the dr. who's foot I kept feeling kicking me. She put the machine to the spot I was talking about and it was his butt!

LOL!!! I guess you're right...I think I just have a very active little girl. Anyway I'll keep you posted on what the doc has to say on Monday. For a moment there I was starting to panic!!! I feel better now, thanks everyone.

Even after all the u/s to confirm I was having twins, it didn't really hit me until both babies had the hiccups at the same time. Have you experienced anything like that?

I would say it sounds like a normal pregnancy though.

I suppose stranger things have happened, but for your sake at 31 weeks I hope you'd know by now! Keep us updated!!

I had all of your symptoms with my first pregnancy (singleton). My ankles were swollen to 12" by 22 weeks. I would keep an eye on your blood pressure. I ended up being induced at 39 weeks due to pre-eclampsia. The elevated blood pressure and swelling could be warning signs.

I didn't know until 18 wks that we were expecting twins. My family kept asking me if I was sure it wasn't twins (at first they told us it was, but we lost 1, going back and seeing the US again, I really believe it was triplets). When they did my US at 18 wks, there was no doubt. There was no way you could have missed one! Good luck!
