Andrew has had a yucky cough for well over a week now. Catherine had it the week before, but not as bad as this. The last few nights he has been waking himself up and has vomited several times b/c of the coughing. He mostly throws up lots of mucous. I am running a cool mist humidifier in his room and giving him his allergy medicine. He doesn't really cough much during the day. It's really only when he's lying down. I know it's probably just b/c of the mucous running down his throat, but should I worry that it's been going on for so long? He doesn't have a fever or anything like that. Would you take him to the pedi? He's losing a lot of sleep too :( Poor guy...

Both of our kids currently have a cough. Ryan is the same way and he starts coughing as soon as he lays down. At night I give them Delsym- it's wonderful and lets them sleep. You can always call the pedi and ask the nurse.

Harrison as mild athsma so he sits iwht his nebuliser before bed to help stop the coughing....Andrew obliously doesnt have athsma, just a cold?
Harri and Aubrie also sleep with a vaporizer in their room, which helps with their cold...basically does what vicks does but vicks burns their chest and the vaporizer for them. and last all night.

Coughs are the worst and they can linger so long. I would try a decongestant to help with all the mucous. It may or may not work, but it is worth giving it a try IMO. My pediatricians office also recommends Delysm cough medicine. It works for a full 12 hours, so that should help him get a good nights sleep. You can buy it over the counter. Although, I have to say that I have found that if they are coughing because of a lot of mucous running down their throat I don't know that cough medicine really helps, but again it is possible it might help and certainly worth a shot. Is he still in a crib? Have you tried putting something under the mattress to elevate his crib at all?

I would probably hold off on the pedi if he is only coughing at night and it acting fine during the day. They probably won't do a whole lot. You could call and ask what they would recommend giving him (if anything).

I would call and ask a nurse what they suggest. They may have some ideas that would help without having to bring him in, but based on the symptoms, might want you to bring them in.

Hope they get to feeling better soon!

Mine are coughing right now too. I used to put thick books under their mattresses to elavate their head. Now that they can use pillows, you can give him one of those, if he doesn't have one already.

I think a call to the pedi or nurse would be a good idea too. Hope he is feeling better soon. ;)

If it's been over a week, I'd take him to the ped. (I would say just to call the nurse, but our ped's nurse almost always says to bring them in, so it amounts to the same thing. ) There is probably not much else they can do, but it's just possible he has a sinus infection, which they might be able to treat. (Although our ped told me once that the only way to truly diagnose a sinus infection is with an X-ray or something, which understandably they're reluctant to do, so they usually "diagnose" it by prescribing antibiotics and seeing if they help.)

Have you tried an antihistamine? Would that dry up the mucuous?

I would give an antihistamine to help dry out like Alden suggested and elevate his head if possible and then maybe use warm steam instead if you have it! Just some thoughts. If he's got green stuff coming up, go to the doc!

I hope he gets better soon and that Elizabeth doesn't get it!! :hug99:
